Anyone know what this could be? My disco recently decided to spray diesal all over the inside of my engine and the noise only started then so I was thinking my fan belt has some diesel on but wanted to be sure.

Can I just spray de-greaser as a stop gap before I get it steamed cleaned?

Almost bound to be the serpentine belt. You can get spray specifically for belts, if you use anything else check the its not going to degrade it

With my limited mechanical knowledge I'm guessing that's the one that snakes it's way around. I've got some Muc-Off Bio Degreaser so will have a goose and see if that will do, if not i'll give soapy water a go :)

Mine also squeaks a bit when accelerating in 2nd (and very occasionally in 3rd). I have no reason to suspect it's been contaminated with diesel or anything else.
Is it on its way out?

Hmm Soapy water didn't work and for some reason somethin started banging for a shirt while :(

I used to work with a guy that would do this when it was my turn to drive the company van.....oh how I would laugh in a slightly manic fashion which didn't solve the problem, in fact it seemed to make it louder somehow:D

Is it a genuine belt? Non gen usually have a smooth back to the belt that can cause this. Gen are "rough".

You could also check all the pulley's. Put a long handled 15mm spanner on the centre nut of the belt tensioner and apply enough pressure to free the belt. Now you can check the tensioner pulley, water pump, jocky pulley and the viscous fan unit. Make sure the bearings are in good condition and the pulley's spin freely. My belt started squeezing just before the water pump let go.
