Squealing Brakes

Almost since the day i've had my Rangie ('99 P38) I have had to put up with awful brake squeal from the front. I spoke to LR and various motor factors, and looked at RAVE, all of which say there are no anti-squeal shims fitted.

I have stripped the brakes numerous times and applied liberal amounts of copper grease to piston, caliper and pads where they are touching but it makes no difference.

The problem is far worse when the brakes are warm or when I apply heavier braking force.

Has anyone else had this problem and managed to cure it or can the experts out there give me some tips to try

Well, after stripping the brakes yet again I found that the lower guide pin (Item 4 on pic) was siezed solid and required the very close attention of a large hammer to come out. Needless to say it wasn't quite the same shape anymore.

Having no access to a replacement part, I reshaped the pin as best as I could before refitting with loads of copper grease all over it. Success, no more brake squeal :) :) .
Does anyone know if this pin is available as a seperate part along with the seal (Item 6) or will LR rip me off for a complete carrier assembly??? Or alternatively does anyone have such a bit going spare or know where I might be able to get one.

Paddocks sell the whole caliper cheap anyway, somewhere around £60, pretty good for a whole caliper, not so much if you just wanted to replace the pin.

Just for future reference, if you have a damaged guide pin, one from a Renault Master van can be used, cut it down with a grinder and then smooth it off and it will work perfectly well if you need to drive it for a few miles. Dont ask how I know this :D
