evening all, got an annoying squeak coming from the fan belt, in the dry weather and its definitely not slipping. i thought it may be a dry bearing so lubed all of the pulleys etc, still the same, so (i know its wrong to do so but was tired of the squeaking noise) i sprayed the flat side of the belt with a bit of wd 40 and the noise went. why would a belt squeak from the flat side being in contact with the tensioner (which is new)? btw, it lasted about 5 mins before squeaking again!!! new belt and tensioner needed? can i change it without removing the viscous fan?, by just looping it over the fan first? cheers, steve.

I spent more on new bearings than I did on fuel. Then I found the penny trick and not a peep since. Also, the value of my Disco almost doubled

I had a chirp i thought was the tensioner. Fitted a new bearing and it was still the same. I thought i would have a look later on when i had more time but forgot. Week later i had a call from the wife saying the car wont start. Turned out it was the alternator bearings that were shot and had now siezed solid making it so difficult to turn over that it would not start. So have a quick look at the alternator..

Penny trick gets my vote and yes you can change the belt without removing the fan. I find it easier with two people:)

Don't get me started on belts and squeaking or chirping. Having got through numerous Land Rover belts having the air con pump front bearing rebuilt and god knows what elseI now will not let a Land Rover belt near my 300TDI. I use Continental belts. They have a ribbed back so there is less chance of making noise. An advantage is they grip the power steering pump so when going through deep water you tend not to lose the steering assistance so much. I even fitted one to the air con pump. They cost a bit more than the normal LR number, but well worth it, no more chirping form under the bonnet.

If the alternator was the problem wouldnt the battery light be on.

On mine it didnt come on, and to cut a long story short took a long time to diagnose just because it didnt (well wife said it didnt and she usually pretty good at these things). Its why i mentioned it. It must siezed up after cooling down after the run and just stranded the wife and father and law 50 odd miles away. I was popular that weekend.. :D
