Squeaky and rumbly landy

Hi,
just taken my defender 90 (1988) on the motorway for a fair distance, all was fine except for a rumling noisecoming from (what sounded like) the rear of the vehicle. When i stopped i looked at the back wheels and gave thema shove, this caused a knocking noise, is this normal? Both rear wheel s have had wheel bearings adjusted for the mot (only a few weeks ago).

Also thereis a sqeaking noise coming from the engine, but it only shows up when idling, tried searching but couldnt find anything pn a squeak when idling.

Sounds like your wheel bearings have 'settled' and need adjusting up again.

The squeak could be the serpentine belt .. search for the penny trick ...

ill look at the belt later. On the wheel bearing front the bearings were only adjusted a matter of weeks ago and the vehicle has done about 120 miles since then, so does it sound like the bearings on the way out?

Hi,
I have just looked at the squealing which i thought was coming from the belts (possibly the serpentine/altenator belt), but on closer inspection/listening it seems to be coming from underneath the 3 front seats, not really sure which side.

On the wheel bearing front could the bearings be worn out?

If they needed tightening up for the MOT, then there is quite a chance that they were worn, and by tightening them up you got a little more mileage out of them (and a PASS!) but too worn to keep going much longer.

Check the trail arms at the axle bush, a worn bush here will make a clunk when the axle is shoved, and can cause a rumble when driving.

It only squeeks when idling, as in car stationary and engine idling? If so then it could be the clutch release bearing they can squeek, but it goes when you raise the revs. Does it change if you press the clutch?

Just triedit. Car stationary, engine running. Pessed the clutch, no difference. The squeak is when the car is idling or when i stop accelerating when slowing down. It goes when i accelerate.

I am not very mechanically minded, but am learning fast with my new machine lol. So could you please explain about the axle bush i.e. where to find it etc. Will it be in the haynes manual?

Also is it hard to replace the rear bearings? For a newbie.

p.s Sqeak tends to be from nearer the drivers side

Ivwe just had a quote from a garage to replace the rear wheel bearings. £200. This seems a bit steep to me. Is this too much or about right?

Also is it sa simple job to do yourself as i know the bearings themselves are pretty cheap.

Thanks, i have looked at the guides but i am sure bustersbus is far more mechanically minded than myself.
I am hopefully going to get the bearings sorted asap.

Just the sqeaking left. It seems to be at certain points of accelerator depression, i.e. if i depress the accelerator a tiny bit it stopsbut it starts again as i increase the revs but then dissapears again.
Any ideas?

Squeaking seems to be coming from transfer box / gearbox area, is there anything that could squeak here?

I had the exact same sound a few weeks back, have a mess around with your exhaust mountings and associated bits. Just a thought

All the symptons point to a knackered propshaft uj but, obviously, if it squeeks whilst motionless then thats my theory blown to bits!

Hi Matt

Rear wheel bearings will cost you roughly 15-20 quid a side plus around a fiver for grease, so save yersen some money and have a bash yourself

Ah was a bit like yersel' until ah got me bus. Get yerself a decent workshop manual and have a go. Ye might be surprised as it's really not that hard a job to do

I live in two places, Sheffield and Lancaster

Ive got the haynes manual and have downloaded a couple of workshop manuals from the web, this site is also really helpful.
Ive had a look at the method of soing it but the main thing im stuck on is how to align the bearings right. Do they sit on an in side rim or is it judgement as to if there straight or not.

My main concern is that if i have a go and cant do it im then stuck with a landy that i will have to pay to be trailored away to a garage.

Aye there's a lip inside the hub that the bearings sit on, just make sure that they sit tight against it. Another thing to remember is take a note of which way the seals are before removing them and get a proper box spanner (not that expensive from the likes of craddocks, paddocks etc) don't be tempted to use a chisel or owt as ye'll end up needin' to buy some more big nuts.

I think i might give it a go myself, ill have a think and a look at the books. Ive looked for a box spanner but on the paddock site theyre only about £4, however it states which axle it isto fit. I have no idea what axle is on my 90, it is just a standard 90. anyone know theaxle numer thing?

Ye'll probably need the 52mm box spanner Matt.
Dunno if ye've got a list of the things ye need yet or not but this might help...

1 x inner oil seal - FTC4785 (this supercedes the old ones)
1 x outer oil seal - FRC8222
2 x bearings - RTC3429
1 x flange gasket - FRC3988
Grease
... that is if ye've got disc brakes on front and drums on rear.
And whatever ye do, stay away from Britpart stuff or ye'll be replacing them pretty soon

Yeah ive got drums on the rear. Thats great, thanks for the advice, ill have a think and a read and then hopefully give it a go myself.

Ill also let everyone know about the squeak if i can find out where its from, maybe ill just hit it with a hammer and itll stop lol.
