My 90 developed a ticking noise a while back which i thought was a tappet that needed adjusting so i set checked and set them today, i was sure it was no.8, anyway started it up an bollox its still doing it so i had a feel around the back of engine and the head gasket is spitting at the bulkhead. It looks quite straight forward to do but is there anything thats likely to give me any trouble.

Cheers Sean, Couldnt really find owt on ere, It does look a straight forward job but it always helps if you know in advance whats likely to be seized or will shear off an curcumcise yer knuckles.

Well i got round to doing my head gasket on Sunday afternoon as the weather wasn't too bad (working outside). Anyway got the head off no probs but found a slightly bent pushrod(No8) just as the daylight started to fade so i packed up fot day.
Monday...get home from work (in the dark) popped the bonnet an get mi led torch out and have another nosey at mi bores an piston tops.... Found a crack in the top of No.3 piston so i had another look at mi head and found another crack between the valve seats on No3...Took it to LOCKSIDE Engineering Tuesday afternoon, did pressure test and its OK they skimmed it but it only took .008 off (Could have got away without it)
Got the sump and oil pump off while getting battered by 50mph hailstones..not nice.. Just waiting for the weather to cheer up now to get cracked on removing the pistons...what started out as a head gasket change has now turned into a lengthy parts list so ticking tdi's beware!

No,gunna stick with this one and do the work it needs. It aint so bad it just takes time, Im gunna do the valves in a nice warm shed tonight and go get a bucket of parts tomorrow i have a 5 day weekend after tomorrow so i am gunna tear that engine a new one! Hopefully:D

Well done!
Join the ranks of the less than one in a thousand people who have done that much work on an engine.

It's very satisfying to get it running again, and to KNOW that everything in there was done nicely.

Awe fanx Charlsey,Its very satisfying as you say and i would not hazzard a guess how much it would cost for a garage to do the work.
I was only gunna change the one piston an replace all the rings but i got a good price for all 4 so 4 it is, pick them up monday, hone the bores and put all mi valves back in the head tomorrow and all being well should be running monday afternoon.
My phone dropped out of my pocket and under a bus the other day but i got a new one today so expect some pics of my offending piston and head!

DUNNIT. a few days behind due to the ****ty weather but im glad to say its running spot on and nice and smooth.
Worst job by far was refitting the ladder frame/oil pump/sump..What a basta.. i mean what a bugger, but it wa all worth it as it sounds nice and new and is much quieter now....Next job Transfer box!

looks like ill be doing the same. im trying to gather what information there is on the net, plus i have a copy of the micro cat too.

i will be doing a rebuild on my 90s 230 tranny box aswell as i have back lashsome where along the drive train. ive never rebuilt a head or a tranny box so will be interesteing and a good learning curve.

cheers
