Disco 2 Spent a lot on it, but thinking long term.

Should I life extend it as much as possible?

Not sure if it would be worth it, I like the car, but thinking galvanised chassis and AMC head.

This could be a problem facing almost all owners of older vehicles.
If you stick to hard headed finances, you should probably have given up two or three grand ago, instead of thinking whether to invest even more of your "hard earned" on a new galv chassis and a replacement head, you've already rebuilt the ACE, and that wasn't cheap I'm sure.
You know you'll never get your money back if you do, but there's more to it than that.
You've invested so much time and effort in bringing the vehicle to what you want it to be, you've put your personality and some of your life into it. It's no longer just a metal box to get you from "A to B", it's become a friend, albeit a sometimes bloody-minded and cantankerous friend.
When you drive down the road, people say "There goes Martin", they don't say "There goes that idiot in that heap o' crap Land Rover", well, maybe they do!
In the end, it's up to you.

I would re-chassis mine and will do when we can afford it. I've always wanted to do a 'proper job' on it ..

If you sell it now you'll end up with another landy starting from scratch, getting to know the vehicle and spending probably the same if not more time, money and effort on it. Better the devil you know I'd say, I'll be keeping mine and I've only sorted some of the usual td5 foibles. As Brian47 says, it's more than a box you must've enjoyed something about keeping her goin something about landys makes them part of the family whatever you do it'll be the right decision for you but I reckon you just want us all to say 'keep going!'

What is the chance if I bought another it would have leaky hydraulics and no CDL?

And not likely to be any less rusty (mine is a bit not a lot but I prefer a big bang repair to patching it)

I'd say pretty good, they're only getting older .. all the time ..

I would also prefer to do a full on rebuild, but pennies matter so I patch and fix as things happen, hoping one day to really do it properly. Doesn't matter to me that it's not standard or up to date, it's what I've put into it to make it 'mine' that matters .. and the wife still loves the number of smiles per mile when we're out in it.

Iv recently been in the position where I sold and gave up the activity on the trailer that I bought my disco td5 to pull,I'd thought of selling that too.Then I thought,what's the point? Il spend what I spent on the td5 again sorting out another car so as said,better the devil I know,Iv welded it up and done all sorts on it so I'll never get that coin back,so may aswell run it into the ground.So now I'm considering,now I have a spare hobby time slot to off road prep it and actually take it off road sometime.Doesnt matter what the value is in £,it's what it's worth to yourself that matters.
People may call us mad,but hey people do worse and more stupid things with money like drugs and gambling etc

I can relate to what you're saying,I feel a bit lost now hence wanting summat to fill the time lol

I need to put a new galv chassis on my 90, but other things need doing... house renovation... new (to us) D2... life in general... and going to work to pay for it all. The sensible thing to do would be get rid and buy a eurobox that would be newer/faster/more comfortable/cheaper to run/more practical... etc, but be bored to tears every time i get behind the wheel. But the last time I made the "sensible" decision about a car I had 2 cars but could only justify 1, so sold my mk2 golf Gti 16v and kept the newer more practical diesel focus estate, and regretted it every day since. I know what I'm doing this time.

I know its mad but a galv chassis on defender/90 ect will only add to its already inflated value, dont think you will see as a good a return on such a large investment in any disco.
Problem is people always says its a keeper/wont ever sell it ect then next thing you know life has got in the way and its gone.
But on the other hand as my good lady says what do you go to work for?
