changed my tyres to 235 x 85 - 16 on a S3 SWB in November last year much better ride and a few inches higher. only the speedometer was not reading correctly if fact it was reading slower than i was actually going which is ilegal by the way.
so, i needed a new speedo down fom a 1536 to a 1408. simple except that the only 1408 speedo i could get my hands on was off a series 2.
there are two fitting at the speedo end S3 push on and S2 screw on. At the other- gearbox end the cables are of a different diameter so will not interchage or swap over.
I found this out after much faving cursing and rolling around under the landy on a very cold day.

which is why i am posting this as no one else seems to... because the answer as with all thing land rover is very simple.
buy two cables S3 and S2 put them in a vice SPEEDO END UP have ready a blow torch and a pair of pliers. Grip the speedo furrule with the pliers and heat gently repeat that GENTLY heat up the furrule while pulling up. and off it will come, do the same with the other cable. next heat up the S2 furrule and put it on the S3 cable and let it cool down completly.
before putting it on the landy soak the inner in EP90 gear oil. now i have a working speedo that reads as it should with no judder, its been on 3 months of daily use and still works :)
or you could buy a new speedo from famour four if your flush

That's odd that the speedo cable ends are different at gearbox end as the parts they couple too is the same part number on series 3 and series 2 gearboxes 232565.
The only item with a different number is the actual drive pinion , which just has the small square hole in for the cable.

you sure that's right about it being illegal for you to be going slower than what the speedo shows?

especially for older cars aren't you allowed c10% error

The end connections with the screws are the same but the cable is of a different pressed shape and diameter. I tried to re-shape one cable and it worked for a week or 2 then broke.

If you are going faster than your speedo shows your breaking the law. Speed traps allow for approx 10:% is not something i would like to test out. As all new cars travel at about 5mph slower than the reading on the speedometer anyway you can test this out against the speed check signs

that's why I am not sure what you say is correct, I understood speed traps were set at limit plus 10% - may be plus another 2mph - because speedos on older cars are not as accurate, I think what you are saying only applies to modern cars built after a certain date. happy to stand corrected, it is only my understanding.

If your speedo shows 30mph and you are doing 25mph that's ok but if your speedo shows 30mph and you are doing 40 that's illegal.

funnily enough I was wondering about sat navs as speedos, mine gives the road speed and the speed I am doing - I suppose they all do - haven't tried it in the series yet but it does seem to read a couple of mph slower than the speedo in the doris' car

its also easier to glance at than down at the speedo.

would it count as a speedo say if your car one was well out?

He was going faster than the speedo showed not slower.

doh, my bad I wrote that the wrong way round :D that's what I was trying to say, a camera would be set for say 33 in a 30 zone togive some leeway for inaccuracy your speedo could say 30 but if it was 10% out you would actually be doing 33
