Not sure if this is Defender only, Military only, or Series as well - hence I do as told and post here!

Coming towards the end of a major overhaul I decided to update the back lighting on the binnacle instruments. I managed to remove the green lenses from the Temp and Fuel gauges by brute force, a lot of ignorance, and a pair of long nosed pliers, but had to take the speedo apart to remove them. In the back of the speedo, as well as the two lamp holders and cable spindle, there is a rubber bung with a grey pellet in it.

I am rather guessing that it could be a desiccant but a search of t'interweb has failed to show up any mention of it. Does anyone know whether it is indeed a dessicant and, if it is, whether it can be dried out like silica gel? Alternatively what is it? The bung is in the back of a 140kph speedo PRC7374 and is on my ex-RAF 110, but it may well be on other speedos as well.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received!
