My faithful 1984 ex-military LWB landy has just suddenly developed a problem with the speedo. It has just stopped working. I've replaced the cable ( both ends correctly inserted ) and it still won't work. The speedometer needle spins when I insert the end and turn it,but when I put it back on and refit the fascia it just won't work! Any HELP would really be appreciated as I have tried everything. If I have to replace the speedo, any ideas where I could get one ( reasonably cheaply ).
Thanks in advance

I had the same issue a year or two ago....the cable turned, but nothing on the speedo.

Turns out I hadn't managed to get the cable end to seat in the speedo properly...it will push in and seem to have been seated...but should go in until it clicks. You may have to let the cable end turn a fraction before you push it in the correct angle - like a key in a lock.

Hi GingerPuss,
Thanks for the ultra quick reply,I'll try that. When I inserted the cable end it did NOT click. So, I'll give it a go and post a reply as to how I got on.
Thanks again,

I had the same problem a while back. I ended up by connecting the speedo end first whilst slowly turning the gearbox end with a battery drill, once the speedo was registering I connected up the gearbox. I half expected it to dislodge again but have had no more problems.

It's worth checking the speedo end of the cable is rotating with the gearbox. My dodgy speedo problems only went away when I changed my gearbox for a recon one, my old box had a knackered speedo drive. You do have to make sure the speedo end is lined up with the speedo head and the cable outer clicks into place - I jacked up a rear wheel and got my son to rotate it as I fitted the head end. And yes, you need the hands of a gynecologist (or vet) to do it!
