Speedo and trip clock failure

Folks driving along the A10 the other day as my clock was trying to turn from 099,999km to 100,000km the first zero got stuck and the number 1 only fractionaly appeared, when they got stuck the speedo seems to think the landy is no longer moving and immediatley dropped to zero kmh!
Im currently gauging speed by gear noise and as fond i am of landy quirks i would feel so much better with a working speedo. Ive heard people say it could be the cable, but the speedo still makes a clicking sound wich increases the faster i go? Could it just be that the cogs are stuck on the digits and thus preventing the needle from thinking the landy is moving. I only suggest this as it seems damn coincidence that a cable should snap on the change over from 0 to 1. Its a 1994 defender so its the first time in 18yrs that this 0 was moving could it have jammed. If it is the cable where would it have snapped, could i take the dial out and have a look behind or is the speedo all sealed?

just get a drill, undo the speedo cable, attach cable to drill, set to reverse. And keep your finger pressed till the battery runs out. Problem solved and youve got an instant low mileage defender you can sell on ebay for a fortune. No???

Ok, in that case id take the dash off and extract the speedo, its not hard, ive just done mine. I didnt take the speedo to bits though as mines a teedee5 and electronical. Yours is anologue so see if you can take it to bits(carefully) and see if you can figure out a solution. If not take it too a garage.

Or someone will come along in a minute and tell you im an idiot and there way id betterer.

With BGB (apart from the clocking bit)

Dash cluster out (4 screws) and pull cable from speedo

1) Make sure cable hasn't snapped (what you can hear might be the cable turning against the broken part that goes into the speedo itself)

2) If cable looks ok, drive slowly to make sure cable is turning (from your descrition pretty sure it will be, but a quick check before further dismantling)

3) If all OK, speedo out and see if you can see a broken or jammed cog
