Noticed a number of threads about speakers on here.

While sorting out the window winder I noticed the back door speaker was not working after I put it back together (might not have been working before but did not notice).

No matter how much I cleaned the contacts as soon as I pushed the plug fully home the speaker went off. Half fitted it worked fine:mad:

As a test I made up a little lead with small lucar plugs on one end and spades on the other. This works fine so I wanted to take out the crimps from the plug shell so I could have another go at cleaning them.

There is a small purple insert which appears to lock the crimps into the shell but when I remove it they still won't come out. Any body know if this type of shell uses more than one retainer.

hiya

i had the same problem, i had the spare terminal crimps. so i cut the old ones off so i could remake the wire.

then used a knife to scratch the terminals clean on the speakers

they sell the terminals in halfords etc

hope that may help

Alternatively you could take this opportunity to fit new ones. I have and 6.5" speakers fit nicely in teh whole and, depending on what you pay, give a far superior sound to the originals.

Only thing to say though is, watch the speaker depth!! as both front and back windows come down past the holes and there isnt much room.

Being a Harmon Kardon system the sound is adequate as it is (it is a car after all). I have looked at replacement speakers however the originals do not have equidistant mounting points so I haven't found anything which will fit. It is quite signifcant for speakers to be properly coupled to the baffle (inner door skin) to sound good so I will keep looking.

Since doing this I have noticed that the drivers door speaker is intermittently dropping out as well. As I can get to the tags which the voicecoil pigtails are soldered to I will fit flying leads onto the speakers and bypass the sockets altogether. I am also looking for some moisture resistant dampening felt to line the doors. Good sound from a speaker is as much due to the cabinet design as the driver but I can't redesign the doors themselves.:D
