Went to Halfords yesterday to get a new set of spark plugs for my Landy series 3 109 1978. " Is that a Discovery or Rangerover Sir?" no it's a bl**dy land rover!!
Went to a local motor factor which was of course closed, then went on to Charlie Browns and got a similar response to Halfords!

I've got the Manual out this morning with a view to getting a type and number for them to see if that might help. Champion UN 12Y for an 8-1 compression and Champion N8 for a 7-1?
Is there any way I can tell which compression ratio mine is and will it make much difference if I use the wrong plug?
Also, has anyone got any substitute numbers for Bosch, NGK plugs etc.

This query has probably been answered somewhere else but I haven't got time to troll through old threads as I need to get back to Halfords before they shut!
I don't personally think my problem is solely plugs, but it's a good place to start!
Many thanks in anticipation!:)

wunt it be just as easy t remove one of yer plugs an see wots wrote ont side ?;)

Yep, great idea, the problem is I have three different types of plug in it, that's why I'm changing them and that's why I would like to find out which is the correct one!

Many thanks for your quick reply tho mondo and giving me a chance to clarify things a bit!:D

Thanks everyone!:) I'll pay a visit to Halfords tomorrow (If it's open!) and see if they have any NGK BP6ES or Champion N9Y's then!:D

That is very good advice.

For whatever reason, NGK plugs seem to perform better and for longer than the others.

We abused NGK BP6ES plugs cruelly in competiton cars for years, and never had one fail, and my SAAB 900 Aero Turbo uses them, and these plugs happily last 50k miles!

Set the gaps at about 0.025" twenty five thou with breaker points ignition, and about 30 thou with electronic sparks.

Copper-grease the threads, but take care not to get that on the business end of the plug.
