In my haste to rebuild the engine out my P reg 300 I snapped off a reverse tap in a sheared bolt in the block. If you picture the P gasket, then the base of the P,thats the one.Dodgy place, lots to go wrong.
Its resisted all drilling,so its spark erosion as the only option now.I have found several firms listed in cornwall but I'd really like a personal recommendation, anywhere within 50 miles max, closer to bodmin the better.

The engine is stripped right down so it can be taken to the engineer,or he can come to me,but...how much should I be paying. The engineers are all coy of giving me even a ballpark figure......

so,west country-ers : any recommendations?
everyone : how much?

thanks in advance

I don't know about the technical stuff as i'm still an amateur but i've had several dealings with mid cornwall 4x4 in bugle(in the industrial estate off Rosevear Road) and they have always been extremely helpful and they appear to be very knowledgeable. They are a 4x4 garage but specialise in Land Rovers.

Also there is a Land Rover garage on my way to work in Buryas Bridge (the wrong side of Penzance). I've never actually been in there but have heard good things from the locals and they always seem to have about a dozen Land Rovers inside and out. I've seen several project vehicles come and go and the place always seems to be busy. I don't have any contact details to hand and i don't know if these are the kind of places to have websites but i'm sure they'll be in the phone book.

Hope this helps

funny enuff it was one of the mid cornwall engineers who said "give it up boy, spark erosion"!

I posted when first I did it and sparking was suggested.Me and me old dad used to do fleet maintainance on smaller HGVs so we are pretty well equipped and he has a lifetime fund of bodge tricks....we tried em all

We just loaded the block for another trip to wadebride to Daftens (sp?),they say they cant spark it but want to have a look....dads just left so watch this space for an update...........

daftens told dad they couldnt do it cos they sold the machine to a bloke in bodmin,he went there, bloke has sold it to another bloke in lostwithiel,so he's off down there next!

sheeesh!Bloke overload

Hi i too have some snaped bolts on the crossmember of my td5. Tried drilling them out and blunted all my drill bits so i have just orderd some cobalt drill bits of ebay supposed be good and aparently will drill through stainless steel. If they are as good as that it should be an easy job. should receive them in the next day or two so fingers crossed.

Hi just to let you know i received the cobalt drill bits tried them on some of the snaped bolts and they drilled right through them, So they should work for you...Tony

ice one lads, dads just gone off to redruth to paynes, hardmetal and a few others. The mythical machine of yesterdays posts has landed in taphouse, afters an overnight in dobwalls....its so big,no one has the space. The latest owner hasnt fired it up as of yesterday hence dads continued road trip.
Apparently due to the dodgy placement it needs to go in a full immersion type machine, not a drip lubricator as it may render the area to fragile.
We tried people with capsstan lathes but it need a 2 ft workspace including tool, and they dont seem to be common.

Keep it coming lads,I am very grateful for the support
