Sound Proofing

I have the Exmoor kit fitted in my Defender 110TD5 and it does make a large difference. It also makes it very easy to clean and also keeps the heat in too.
I would recommend it if you can justify the expense.

Reet now then how about getting a sleeping mat intended for camping from Millets or wherever and making your own there only a fiver. Or is this the Yarksheeerman coming out in me.

Our Series III Safari has soundproofing in. It hasn't made a lot of difference, we still need to talk loud if you want to be heard. Forget mobile phones (this is a good thing!) No radio as you won't be able to hear it anyway.

The sound proofing is felt based, it traps the water, stays wet for a long time and rots out the footwells bulkhead as Land Rovers always leak.

The exmoore stuff and the Wright off road stuff is rubber and not felt. I just took all the carpet and sound proofing from the rear of my 110 csw for exactly that reason and the felt sound proofing that was factory fitted was extremely mankey.... I replaced it with 6mm fluted rubber matt from machine mart.

'bait.

The 6mm fluted mat comes in 10m rolls, which is more than plenty. To be honest I think I still have about half left. The roll was around £80 and weighs 85Kg or so!!! I used some spray carpet glue, which surprisingly didn't stink the car out. I think it made a huge difference, but the problem is that I had no carpet or sound proofing in the back for a couple of months while I got round to fitting the rubber. I used quite a few stanley blades and used a chinagraph pencil to mark and a long steel rule to cut against.
You can get 3mm mat which should be just as good a lot lighter and cheaper.
The car sounds so much, quieter. But as I say, it wasn't an A B comparison. I'm very happy and I'll definitely be getting the molded mat system for the front once I can afford it!

Thanks very much bait that is a great help. What is that thing which looks like the lid from one of those food containers you see at an all you can eat chinese???

lol, It is indeed a gastonome, no not a fat dwarf, but one of those things you serve food from. It was a reasonbly cheap storage box, I could have made one from thin ally, riveted and sealed it with mastik, but I couldn't be bothered. So 18 quid got me a deep 2/3 size container. You can get them second hand sometimes from catering suppliers. I keep a few tools in mine. It was dead simple to fit, just a marker pen, a drill and a hack saw. I think that some of the older LWB S3's had them as std.
I'm going a bit mad on the storage and I'll be fitting a small ammo box next to a 2 man bench seat in the next couple of days. I'll post a pic if it looks good, if not.......

Thanks very much again, The saying is true you learn something new everyday!! Does it fit any where along the bench at the back or does it need to go somewhere specific?

It will only go on the opposite side to your filler cap, towards the rear. There is a limit to how large/deep it can be. If you pop your head under the rear left hand (passenger in the UK) side you'll see what I mean. Also not too near the rear or it will interfere with the lights and the little cover that goes over them.
