Hi Everyone

The coolant in my Freelander td4 (o2 reg) keeps dropping quite dramatically over short periods of time.
There is a puddle under the passenger side of the engine when ive been parked up for couple hours. The stuff thats leaking doesnt seem to smell of anything and the temperature gauge never goes above sitting perfectly in the middle, but theres quite a lot of it.

What you think could be the problem? Any advice is appreciated, thanks. :)

Do you mean has it been changed, as in via a service etc? If you do, then no it hasnt. Its due for a service in June - but think we will be booking it earlier so they can have a look where leak is etc. I noticed that the coolant container was practially almost empty about 6weeks ago, so we put a ltr of required coolant in etc to bring up to correct level... but on checking again the other day, it had dropped dramatically - thats when i started checking for puddles etc....

I'm new to this Landrover business . . . only had my freelander since October!

Only wondered if it had been changed and perhaps not refilled properly so air lock could cause leaks due to excessive pressure. But thats ruled that out.

Two things I'd check

First look at all the hoses for splits and loose connections.
Second take the oil filler cap off and check for "mayonaise"

Okay thanks very much for tips! Will get fiance to get his head under bonet and check out those pipes! Hope its not a major problem, im glad its not overheating or anything. Thanks again

Oh, one more thing... if there is something that resembles 'mayonaise' when the cap is taken off - what does that mean/what problem does that suggest? (and how easy is it to get fixed!)

Finding mayonaise on the oil filler cap would tend to suggest Head gasket failure.

Not sure what the going rate is, phone a few local garages as well as the one you were going to take it for it's service and ask them to give you an idea of cost for head gasket replacement.
Not book it in, just ask what it would cost.

Like I said hopefully it'll be just a hose or loose hose clip.

Just out of curiosity what have you been topping the coolant up with?
Can I assume it is the Landrover recommened coolant?

might be worth checking around the top of the coolant header tank. if you find any witness marks, like crystals or dried salt, there is a possibility that either cap or bottle is failing.

bottles known to develop hairline fractures around the screw top that only show up under heat / pressure.

good luck with this.
