Hi all,
just thought I'd share a wee problem I came across. It concerns the Breather in the drivers side rocker cover. On the 4.0 (Thor) this was totally blocked, despite regular oil changes. The engine suffers from oil leaks and mayo in the filler. I've since cleaned it out and given it an oil change so will check in a few days and see if its made any difference. Tricky job but hopefully well worth it.
On an old Rover P6 I had, the flame traps ( breathers) were so blocked the engine chucked its oil out of every gasket area it could and the valley gasket was bent up with the pressure.
While I was at it I also checked the breather pipes on the transfer box, diffs....some were clear but the transfer box was blocked, and had leaks from the seals. That may be why I had to put some oil in it a few months ago...

Won't mayo in the filter indicate an oil/water mixture in engine??

If oil is clean it is caused by condensation being sucked into a cooling engine as the crank case gasses contract. Usually indicative of short runs where it does not get burned off. The condensation then mixes with hot oil mist to form the mayo. It is not as many think indicative of head gasket failure. With that depending on where the leak is you would get water in the oil or oil in the water. Keeping the breather system clean and clear will reduce it.
