Something non-standard for a first fender??

Just come across a 110 Jreg fender, at what seems to be a good price, from the pics it looks solid, bit of surface rust on the rear cross member, nothing a bit of a tidy up wouldnt fix, the interior is a bit shabby, but hey, who cares.

The only bit thats worrying me, is that the standard 200TDi has been mated to an auto box, whislt the auto box in itself doesnt worry me (except for off road, see other thread!!), should I even contemplate my first landy being non standard, and, by the look of things, not a standard conversion should I have problems down the line.

The vendor could remember if it was a RR or disco auto box, is supposed to be getting back to me, might go over and have a look at it.

All Landies once they are a few years old are fairly non standard due to the free availability of easily interchangeable parts between models, personally I wouldnt let it bother me but then i dont mind getting grubby with the spanners.

what i would do is first find a local landy specialist garage and ask their advice, post up a location (doh just seen it: Leeds)and ask other members for recommendations of good indies, you dont say whether you will be repairing it yourself or paying for repairs, it makes a difference if you are doing the work yourself then i wouldnt be afraid of anything and just crack on if you are paying find a garage you like and trust (in so much as you can) and ask their advice before you buy the thing as it will be them doing the work.

p.s i wouldnt worry about the autobox off road a lot of people prefer them as the power delivery is smoother than a manual.

I'd buy it - it's not really non standard - it's LR parts... if it was a BMW engine with a benz auto box I would maybe say keep away for a first landy - well any landy for that matter.

The 200tdi will service in exactly the same way as will the auto.

Ill be doing the majority of the work myself, only welding that won't be I think (cos Ive never welded before!)
I have a good mechanic I can call on if needed who has owned landys himself, so is pretty good with them, or failing that Jake Wright is not far from me, who, having been round for so long (My dad used to go to him!!) must be doing something right.

Have you seen how rare diesel auto Defenders are?
Between Auto Trader and eBay, there are only 5 auto tdi models for sale in the country, and only 2 of those have the 300tdi engine.

Rare but not unheard of, a lot of them about, people just don't tend to sell them as they have probably spent a fortune converting them.

Bog standard parts and common with the 300tdi in the Disco - so not really much to worry about here.

this ones deffo a conversion, theres still a hole in the floor where the manual stick should be, the auto stick is further back, the transfer box stick looks standard though (right stick, right place!) the inside looks like a bit of a bodge, but it'll tidy up easy enough with the right cubby box and a bit of fettling

i wouldn't worry too much about it been an auto. i've had auto discos that have off roaded just fine, the 200 tdi is a solid engine. if its local i dont mind taking a look with you (i'm in Bradford but at the leeds side) i'm no expert but i've owned a few and know how the gear box should feel as you drive

Cheers, might just take you up on that, unfortunately Ive ended up working away next week, so will have to hope its still there when I get back, if not, I'll just keep looking, I'm on the Bradford Side of Leeds, not far from Yeadon Centre, so probably not that far from you!
I'm not specifically after an auto, its just this one came up, serious searching will be going on in a couple of weeks, After work/hols are out the way and things go back to normal.
