So I have collected this little lot for the weekends jobs….Wish me luck.

attachment.php

Starting Saturday I hope to do…

New front timing cover
New oil cooler and oil cooler lines
New water pump
New timing gears and chains
New rocker cover gaskets
New inlet manifold gasket

Renew sparking plugs
Renew Serpentine belt
Renew engine oil and filter
Renew Coolant
Renew transmission oil and filter
Renew Diff oil
Renew transfer box oil

Renew UJ's

Swap front diff for better S/H unit
Swap gear selector for S/H unit
Swap glove box button and cable

I think that's it. I have a large box with something like £350 worth of new parts to go on or in the car. Hopefully it'll cure my oil and coolant weep.

Also, does anyone know if you have to take the front brake discs off to remove the hub carrier? I was hoping I could just unbolt the lot and slide it out to release the front diff?

im sure you dont need to remove the discs to pull the half shaft out i didnt when i did my leaky rear half shaft seal just remember to pull those abs sensors and good luck

Holy crap Al, that's a good weekends work you have there!!

I wish you luck and you have my number if you get stuck with the timing chain cover :D:D:D I think, maybe, just....long time ago now, but I remember once doing mine I think.....:D:D:D

I have an order of importance so if it all doesn't get done so be it. It'll have to wait!

I've read and re-read RAVE (and the excellent how-to's on here) over and over and bought every nut, gasket, tube of sealant, washer and Hardy-Spicer tool I might need so hopefully it's go pretty smoothly. I've even printed off the pages I'll need from RAVE so I've got the specs to hand!

Plus hopefully my brother will be around to help out a bit if needed.

I took your old timing cover off last weekend Ant, so I've had a dry run, mine's not been apart in 15 years by the look of it so I might be in for some fun… keep your phone on just in case.

How did you find the job??

Tis only bolts at the end of the day, not as scary as people think!

Pulley tool work??

Pulley tool worked a treat thanks. Probably all done in 3 hours!

I think it also helped a lot that you'd had it all part 6 weeks earlier. I think getting the TC off mine is going to take some "persuasion". I worry about that sort of thing with aluminium everywhere!

Glad it worked OK, can be a fiddle getting the bolts in and at the right angle, but glad it helped.

Yes, after 15 years in one place, it isn't going to be nice to you!

As you have found out, it is located on dowels and this can cause it to stick a bit.

Did you take the 4.0 one off with the Alternator in place? if so, you may find it easier to get yours off if you remove the alternator and bracket first, gives more room to play with.

Yes, aluminium doesn't lend itself to well to levering against, but take your time, get a some good penetrating spray like plusgas (spelling ?) (we use Lever by Aztec Chemicals at work, there is one called Freeway that the Aircraft boys use and is the muts for loosening things, but not sure if you can get it commercially!) as this may help loosen things off.

Take yer time, and she'll start to move!

We took the alternator off the 4.0, but the TC just slid off. Really easy! I think we could even re-use the gasket TBH.

I have pots of Plusgas so I'll get that on nice and early, and of course the whole area has been getting a fine spray of engine oil from somewhere so perhaps that'll help!

As I'm doing the inlet manifold gasket too, I'll take the alternator and all sorts off the engine, so room to manoeuvre should be there.

I'm just resigned to lots of jigging and swearing and getting cold! Lots of cups of tea usually help!

I think you will have to take the discs and calipers off to get at the bolts on the front hubs and while you are at it check the backplate for cracks.

Hmmm RAVE doesn't mention removing the discs

It gives a clue here…

It's one of their hidden processes, when you go and "see BRAKES REPAIR" you find out to remove the brake disc shield you have to remove the road wheel, the brake pads, the brake calliper, the ABS sensors, and then the heat shield.

I was hoping since I just want to pull the hub assemblies out a bit to release the front diff I might not have to do all of that. I was hopeful I could just undo the four bolts holding the hub assembly to the carrier and pull.

Reading about a bit on here, there is a good chance the hub assemblies will be rusted on and a sledge hammer is needed to separate them! If that's the case I'll leave it for another day, I've got enough lined up already. And if it's that much work, I may as well change the axel oil seals whilst I'm there.

Or just pay someone to do it. Sledge hammers and steering components sound like an odd mix to me!

That whole front axle looked newer than the rear one. Not sure if it is different to the 4.6 but tempting to see if the whole thing could be dropped out and swapped over.

I've got a BIG butane torch in the shed if you need some heat to loosen things up.

I daren't own a sledgehammer. I break enough things with pin-hammers.
