I have a 2005 TD5 Defender, which has been having various electrical issues. From starting problems, no fuel pump, windows don't work, and Air con not working.
Have replaced multiple relays, and have a bag full of 8 that are now spares. On replacing relays, items would work for a short while, and then either burn out the relay, or refuse to work.
Frustrating to say the least.
I think I solved the issue: I believe the spade connectors were too loose, and this caused poor contact, and then heat.
Came up with a simple tester. This consisted of a piece of wire with a spade bit on the end. If it slipped in easily, connector is too loose. I then used a jewellers screw driver to adjust (read pry) the female connectors tighter. This was accomplished without having to remove wires, and was quite simple.
So far has worked.

Cheers,

if you had pushed the the jewellers further down the relay block this would have released the spade terminal locking tab a quick pinch with a pair of pliers prise the locating tab out and push the connections back job done
and the contact point on either side will grip the blades of the relay as designed to
