Hi, I’m currently doing battle with electrical faults on my 1994 Defender Tdi90.

The indicators aren’t flashing. They come on solid for Left, Right and the Hazard switch. I’ve tried replacing the hazard switch and the flasher relay which changed nothing. I’ve searched online for other ideas but haven’t found anything. Has anyone had this problem before, or got any ideas?

Sounds like a faulty relay. It's a fairly simple circuit - when the hazard switch is off, the live (green) from the ignition powers the indicator relay - green wire into the relay. When the hazard switch is on, the permanent live (purple) powers the relay and both sides of the indicators are connected to the output of the relay. In both cases, the load of the lights is sensed by the relay, causing it to switch on and off. make sure all the relay connections are good - black to earth, and 12v on the green in. The other 2 wires are to the indicators and trailer light.

Hi,

No, they are still the old bog standard lights. And I have just discovered that the indicators come on (solid light) regardless of whether the indicator flasher unit is actually plugged in or not. So is that pointing to some sort of short somewhere?

Yes - if the lights are on with out the flasher relay plugged in, they are getting power from somewhere else. You have already replaced the hazard switch, I think the next place to look is the indicator switch. Unplug it from the loom and see if the lights go out.
