After worring for ages about my vcu(it tightens on lock,i know its normal but it does stop when i take off power)and reading all the mixed comments about them ive decided to remove my vcu and props for now!
I drove my m8,s and his did seem looser and i decided to just leave alone and stop worrying but i have only off roaded once since ive had it so i will try mondo mode and see if it as good as peeps say, then i can poss refit mine when weather bad or save and replace it and be done with it!
I did mention to my m8 about going to sarisbury plain tommorow so maybe get 1 last trip before i remove!!
It seems a shame cos i love the landy (4x4)bit but keep stressing when parking e.t.c cos of tightness and as said dont really off road so i could save some damage to other bits poss!

Hi bustermilo

Can you let me know how you get on going mondo as I have been thinking about doing it,I have got high mileage and I dont know the history of my freelander and the state of the vcu.
Thank You.
Roger.

So you just remove the rear prop shaft and hey presto 2WD or is there more to it than that? How does it affect anything else is MPG affected? Thinking it may be a stop gap if I find my VCU is on the way out

you need to remove the front prop or the whole thing mpg not much more than what you are getting now

Right ive done it! and roger its good!!lol. I took the plunge and removed the props and vcu today, very easy job and only took 20 mins(the only thing i would say is get a m8 to help or use a axle stand because i chose to do it without jacking the landy up and when it come to the last securing bolt i had the whole weight on my left arm and ratchet in right hand and its heavy!!lol).
I nervously took for a test drive and was really surprised!as for moving on full lock(fowards or backwards)there is no tightness there at all!.As for driving it really does not feel that different and its hard to notice its no longer 4x4(infact my dad had no idea).Theres no increased body roll as some had mentioned, and to me it defo feels more nippy but not sure about increased mpg yet but im more interested in saving drive train then extra mpg.The only slight thing that i could feel was when you on and off power you can feel engine "move" slightly as any front wheel drive vehicle but i suppose this could change with mounts condition. As said im really impressed with the change and am defo going to leave like it for a while and maybe get the vcu tested or just pop back on for winter,i would still be going light offroading or greenlaning and prob wont even refit for that as i dont do mega off roading and it will cope with greenlanes fine im sure.
Anyway enough ranting but "mondo" or 2wd is great and defo for me and i like the fact of not worrying now "should it be that tight?is it going to go bang? lol

put mine to 2wd coz it was knackered much better to drive now, you can get a blanking plate off ebay for 20 quid for the back of the gear box, it means you dont have the shaft that attached to the front of your prop shaft hanging out,
