Linseed oil comes from the seeds of the linseed plant, also known as flax.

In the old days in Cornwall, train oil, from the pressing of pilchards, was used for almost anything, due to its availability and low price.

I don't think it is available now, and it would probably have given your landy a very distinctive smell!
