Hi All,
I've got a 2005 TD4 auto with 63k on the clock. I've asked for plenty of advice of late. Had an intermittent starting problem - since then have replaced the battery, replaced the fuel filter and had the RAC out. Problem seemed to point to a camshaft sensor BUT car wouldn't start just now so gave the fuel pump tray under the wheel arch a knock and it started ok.
Also, the amber ! light was coming on briefly if going up a hill or round a sharp corner.
The RAC bloke did a diagnostic test and couldn't find anthing wrong.
Advice/answers to the following please:
1. Is this a fuel pump issue? If so best place/price/make to get a new one?
2. If it is a pump issue would that show up on a diagnostic test? I guess if it was having a working moment then it wouldn't
3. Could these symptoms point to something else? Basically don't want to go ahead and do the pump job and find still have the issue.

Thanks in advance for all useful input...appreciated. Cheers

Rikky

Thanks for that. Changed the fuel filter on Friday so checked all the connectors and seemed ok. Just strikes me as odd that it works now and again and then doesn't. I thought that the pump would either work or it wouldn't.
Problem with the amber! also worse when low on fuel so again suspect the pump

We had exactly same problems, it was the pump.

Thanks for the replies. Having just replaced the filter at least I know where and how to replace the pump. Does anyone have any suggested place to buy one.........think it's going to cost around £100......that right?

Yep genuine ones are approx £120 to£130.
You can buy cheaper ones but they don't last and are quite noisy in comparison.

I had a similar problem with the amber lamp & intermittent starting - turned out to be the rear pump BUT it was noisy, so it was obvious what the issue was.

Can you get someone to retrieve any logged faults?
The TD4 should log the reason it put the amber light on in the ECU memory, dunno what readers RAC use, but it might only show current faults, not historic ones.

Quick update - as I said I changed the fule filter and since then to car has been fine. No starting issues and running really well.
Does that mean the fuel PUMP is ok or is it likely to fail in the near future? Very odd situation........

As I've got a 2005 td4 I thought there was only one pump - the one under the wheel arch......that right?

Hi all, i maybe way off the mark here, but the models with two pumps i thought one was soley for the fuel burning heater, still a newbie and trying to find my way around

it is right that they have two pumps for the engine and then I think there is another one for the fbh or I could be wrong to hot to reach for the haynes

Hi , the facelift has 2 pumps , low pressure lift pump in the rear wheel arch , and a high pressure injector pump , belt driven on the engine , both bosch .
