SNOW what to expect ??

last year my freelander was in mondeo mod thanks to freelander spears uk:frusty:
and it was ok in the most part but would not get up the steep hill to my house. i made it 40 yard then it just spun i got a tow up from my mate disco:crazy_driver:.
this year its all working fine so what thay like with std road tyers i run Uniroyal Rally rain sport 4x4 tyers.
will i be able to go out in the snow with confidence and play

my last landrover was a disco 1 300tdi with genral A/T 2s on and had lot of fun but after last year i lost alot of confidence in my freelander.

Agreed - on any surface (apart from pure sheet ice) - I can't get mine to lose grip at all. Fantastic!

Only with really aggressive acceleration coming out of a bend do I even see the 'TC' light come on.

I have also came to the conclusion that 'ordinary' 4X4 tyres are better in the snow than super-knobbly A/T tyres.

What you need is lots of sipes - not big lugs - so your Uniroyals should be ideal.

Mine didnt miss a beat last year - we only had decent snow for one night in Kent last winter and I was on night shift while it fell.
Had great fun driving home at 0630 on a Sunday morning in the fresh laid snow. Normally cant wait for my bed after working nights but went out for a drive visiting all the spots Ive been stuck in over the years.
Always dreaded snow - been stuck many times but no worrys now.

Yup, as above really. Was my first winter with the Freebie last winter, I couldn't have been more impressed, dare I say it, traction control, ABS (and the luxury of heated windscreen and heated seats) made it better than my old 90 (or at least warmer).

I run the Uniroyal Rain Sports and have been through some pretty crazy places in the snow. Never once have they let me down and the looks you get off the tratter boys (complete with snow chains) when you're in "their" playground..

I live up a very steep hill, it's around 1 mile from bottom to top. 3/4 years ago I had a company car (Astra 1.3 D) and only managed to get about 40 yards up the start of the hill, my wife came along in the freelander and towed me all the rest of the way up. Now I'm not joking when I say a mile from bottom to top next time your in Wales, take a trip up to the Rhondda Valleys, and you'll see what I mean. Absolutely fantastic in the snow.

This was last years snow, Thats me on the right.

I can confirm Freelanders and black ice don't mix this is what happen to me on the 5 Dec 2010 it was -15 that morning

Yes - we must all remember that although our Freelanders can perform brilliantly in snow they cannot defeat the laws of physics.

When you say super knobly do you mean BFG AT style tyres or MT tyres like DD has on his?

I'm looking forward to playing in the snow though

I went out in my old one and got a shock the vcu from freelander spares a month earlier, it decieded that it was not going to work I got on the phone and they did send another, but after that I changed the car for another freelander i will not have anything of them again, there has been al sorts of things said about them on here and the do not defend them selfs, the other thing I had of them was a drive shaft i left it on the bench for 2 weeks and it went rusty now you should not get that with a new one? enough said I think.

Blimey hope you didn't suffer any injury's in that, but yes your right I don't think anything can be done where black ice is involved except be more aware of the conditions. Was there much damage to the freelander ???

To clarify: From my experience in both fresh snow and on hard packed snow surfaces the less aggressive treaded 4X4 tyres outperformed the more off-road ones. Mud tyres seemed to cut through the snow while the ones with lots of sipes stayed on top of the snow and gripped the snow surface itself, rather than search for firm road beneath.

No criticism meant of the BFGs or anyones choice of tyre, but on that winter trip last year I certainly had the edge over them. In claggy mud it's a different story of course, the Continentals get 'choked and can't clear the mud off themselves.

Here in sunny Norfolk we have had a fair lump of snow at times during the last two winters, up to six inches at times, some of which lasted for a week or two, not long for some I know, but for us that was unusual. Our Freelanders have ordinary road tyres fitted and neither had any problems on the fresh snow or the frozen stuff. The wife was getting to work no problem(10 miles each way) whereas some others who lived a lot closer couldnt get out of their roads, or so they claimed !!

£4500 insurance bill why so much you ask? Cant see from photos but there is a 4 foot drop into a ditch under the freelander its only the tree at the front which is stopping the freelander from falling, parts replaced
Front bumper
Head lights & head lamp guards
Bonnet
Front passenger door because the sill had pushed up into the door and wouldnt open
Full respray
