Snow tyres or 50/50?

I'll be buying a Freelander TD4 (not sure where/what just yet) and driving it back home at the end of this month.

Does anyone have experience of driving in snow on very hilly/mountainous roads?

I have close to a 30deg slope just to get out of my Hamlet (no probs with the Disco) and wonder what tyres to put on for the winter if it snows as bad as last year....

How long do you want the tyre to last and how much snow will you have in that time?

I'm not bothered about the duration of tyre life- and If we have the same weather as last year it was 5 months of snow, sometimes 3' in one day and only possible to get out after the snow plough had been through.

I have 50/50 on the Disco, no problems at all last year, but the Freelander is a different set-up. If anyone has any experience with the Freelander in these kind of conditions I would be very interested.

I regularly use Colway MTs for laning in snow...rarely loose traction and only once lost control on solid packed ice slope

Do you use steel wheels for winter snow/laning, or the same wheels all year round?

You'll have no worries with the Freelanders foot hold. I use Mich Synchrones which are a 50/50 and a damn good tyre. Sadly, they stopped making them but it might be worth seeing if anyones got some stock. I gather the Latitude has replaced the Synchrone. I don't know what that tyre is like but if its anywhere near the Synchrone then it'll be a goodun.

I drove on a mix of Synchrones and Scorpions when we had that heavy snow in Feb. Both gripped well and held the road whilst other vehicles slipped. I also did well in sloppy mud on Salisbury Plain. Because of this and as the Synchrones were no longer produced, I replaced all mine with Scorpions last month. Remember also that the Freelander is much lighter in weight and doesnt sink and compact snow like the Disco will.

I've got a set of latitudes on mine, just as good as Synchrones, if a little quieter on the road. They coped admirably in the snow of last january/february, and they coped fine when I went greenlaning with JPS back in the spring. It wasn't extreme mud by any imagination, but they just plugged on through.

What is the weight difference between the Disco and the Freelander?

Never had a problem with the Disco in this stuff.

Never mentioned above where I lost control it was impossible to stand and people were slipping over and sliding under motor

Unfortunately, I live in it for about 4/5 months of the year when it's bad. The bottom picture you have is the amount of snowfall we had almost every day last winter...

I can assure you the novelty quickly wears off
