Snorkel, stupid question!

So fitted the snorkel over the weekend, fitted the brackets up the roof rack front support leg, was wondering how you actually water proof the pipe joint between the plastic moulding behind the wing and the pipe that runs behind the engine, as you cant get to it (its a TD5).

Any ideas welcome.
 
What snorkel is it? Not all are designed or intended to be water tight. Usually they are referred to as high raised air intakes. These are designed for dusty/sandy conditions more so than deep water.
 
Looking at that I would say its meant to be waterproof and some silicone sealant will help you in your quest.
Can you fit the flex pipe before you fit it into the wing?

See Part #2? Silicone that to the inner wing. Then silicone your snorkel to the outer wing.

Part #3 also has to be silicone'd to Part #2.

Basically every single join between the intake on the outer wing to the airbox must be sealed tight with silicone.

Then theres a few holes in the airbox itself.

Thanks all, its the part 2-3 thats a swine to get at now as its all silicon sealed to the wing and no space inside to get around it.
 
EDIT - I misread but hopefully this is still of some help..

Way I did it was to disconnect from the MAF including the airbox all the way to part #2

Then silicone part two to the inner wing and let dry

Then silcone what you have left together, leaving the pipe that connects to the airbox free for the time being

You will also need two bottle caps. There's a drain hole at the bottom of the flexi tube and another inside the airbox. A bottle cap and some generous silicone will seal them.

Reinstall & reconnect your airbox

Then get a chunky cable tie and tighen it a little but leave it still loose around part 3

Reinstall all the pipe work you removed as one piece. Be sure to add plenty of silicone before you reinstall, its easier to do outside the engine bay.

Connect everything up and tighten the cable tie at the joint between part 2 and part 3

That should leave you with a fully sealed air system. Leave it the silicone to dry before driving anywhere in case you blow one of the seals you've made.

Leave it at least 48hours then test. Pop the top off your snorkel, start the engine. First thing you should hear air being sucked in. Second test with the engine running block the airway, book, clipboard anything that wont get sucked in. Not your hand!

If it stalls then your sealed. If it runs then there air is getting in.
 
Hi,
I started with the method described below but the plastic parts on mine (TD5 also)
fitted together so badly that I doubted that I'd ever get it to seal. As stock I would get water marks in the air box, I guessed rain making its way in. Ended up scrapping the stock tupperware and fitting what you see in the pics. I'm much happier with this...
probably a bit OCD :p
