[GALLERY=][/GALLERY]Hi everyone, I'm looking to put a snorkel onto my 1987 Defender 90 200 tdi. Ive bought one off ebay, second hand which looks like it goes onto drivers side, only thing is all the photos I've looked at of 200 tdi the snorkel are on the passenger side plus i have no vent holes in the side of my wings. Plus i have a Disco 200 lump in it and haven’t a clue how or what to connect to even if i can fit it. Can anyone give advice please, thanks Andy. Sorry tried to upload photos of engine bay but wouldn’t let me. But my filter is at front were viscus fan should be. Also there is a fabric covered air pipe around an inch diameter coming from top of engine towards passenger wing but not connected to anything.
 
Def 200 normally nearside, def 300 normally offside, only this way due to where the original wing vents were placed.

To load pic just drag it from your desk top/photo album into the bit where you normally write.

Will need pic of the engine bay and the snorkel, as there are many type/makes/copies, engine retrofits can be a mare to make the plumbing look smart.

The small pipe will be the engine breather pipe, this is normally plumbed into the air intake before the turbo, it is okay hanging so long as you do not do any serious deep water work/wading.

Interesting place for the air cleaner that, Some nice warm air going into it from the intercooler only for said warm air to go through the cooler to be cooled ! but not as cool as it would be if it was air from outside :rolleyes:o_O. Sort of works against what intercooler is there for. Not right.
On 200 the air filter is mounted on top of the NS inner wing with intake at the side of the NS wing near the door where it can get cool fresh air. 300's have filter on rear right of engine in front of where the fuel filter is with intake in the OS wing.

Yes i was awear filter wasn’t any good there but it was there when i bought it. I am going to move it. Im just getting everything sorted to get it right, 90% done just top of bulkhead to replace then back door, carpets and snorkel everything is waiting to go on after bulkhead is finished. Just having trouble with placing snorkel as ive no side vents ect
 
That the engine must've come out quite a posh discovery as the two switches on top of the thermostat housing I believe were for the air conditioning system, Which was a pretty rare option on the discovery 200 TDI
 
Why are you wanting a snorkel ? are you expecting to go into deep water or very dusty roads? [ Do not do any water with the set up you have ] As others have said would be a shame to cut those wings.
Not sure coz air box is a bit different from mine but I recon Intake and out put of air to engine is the wrong way around. What do others think ?
 
That the engine must've come out quite a posh discovery as the two switches on top of the thermostat housing I believe were for the air conditioning system, Which was a pretty rare option on the discovery 200 TDI

To be fair I don’t go in deep water but i do use a lot of farm tracks and quarries for shooting so wanted the snorkel just in case especially with quarries you never know what your driving into. As for the engine set up i would really appreciate some help if someone as noticed something wrong. But the defender does drive good and ive not had a problem with the engine as all running gear has been reconditioned. Thanks Andy

So long as it can get clean filtered air it will literally run forever.
I would move the air filter to the passenger side inner wing as per the original 200 set up, dont bother looking for def 200 air filter housing as they are silly money.
Pic of mine, see the black pipe from rocker cover running to under the brake servo? that is the same as your canvas covered one, and should connect to the blue blank stub at the end of the air filter housing, I have it vented to atmosphere as it used to like dumping some random white snot into the filter housing which used to shag the filter.

It's the right way around, just turned 90 degrees about.

Looks like a 300tdi nearside wing and a 200tdi offside wing.
My mate has a 110 the same. My fokker has a 200 and a 300 wing so vents on both sides...
 
Thanks everyone for the advice i will move the air box to passenger wing and connect the pipe. That pipe has been bathing me for ages as to were it goes. Ive had this 90 at one of the best landy blokes around my area for gearbox, transfer box recon also checking its running at correct temperature so definitely been under the bonnet and they haven’t said a thing about air box been wrong place. You would think they might of said the money ive paid. But thank you for your help and advice I appreciate it. Andy.
 
Here's a picture of a 300tdi engine bay,

Your engine bay has the layout of a 200tdi with the fuel filter on the bulkhead (rather than infront of the expansion tank) and the PAS res on the opposite side.
On the 300tdi there is a cradle/bracket on the left side of the engine over the vacuum pump which holds the air filter housing.
The air comes in via the vent of the offside wing and accross and up into the filter.
The filtered air come out the back of the housing, turn right around the back of the engine and right again forwards into the turbo through an elephants trunk...
The braided engine pipe off the cyclonic breather enters the trunk at the back of the engine.

Here's a better pic of the elephants trunk, this pic also shows a Garrett VVT turbo which has the same inlet as the standard turbo on your engine and an air-con pump with a cowl over it in front of that sexy alluminium expansion tank.

Your mechanics are working with what they've got.
There aren't that many 'standard' Defenders left, most are Bitsas to be fair...

I have that on my fire damaged engine I did not realise it was a rare option. I knew it was for AC, I also have the twin pulley and the timing cover mount for the belt tensioner although this one just has the blanking plate despite having the switches.

@andyjack as has been said above why do you want to fit a snorkel? it is going to be a very involved job with your current setup as will involve either changing the wing or bodging a hole cutout in the existing ones (I say this is a bodge as the proper wing it is more than just a cutout and is actually a recessed molding in the sheet metal). There also some other interesting things going on with your wings like the fact the chequer plate does not have large enough holes for the top covers so you cannot remove them without removing the chequer plate which is rivetted in place?

another option which may be easier as it is likely what your vehicle had originally with the original engine is to go back to the TD/NA air filter setup. That is what I have in my 110 which was originally a TD and you can see it quite clearly here as I do not have the wings fitted currently. I then have it going back to the nearside side inlet which I have a snorkel fitted to using the original TD pipework. you can also clearly see on mine the position equivelant to the blue cap for the vent pipe and the vent pipe in the first pic. it is also not ideal but with the turbo position on a discovery neither is the original defender position shown by @lynall
