the way an oil bath air filter works, is by first drawing air through the oil bath, in which any large particles settle to the bottom of the oil, from there the air bubbles through the oil and takes some oil with it into the metal mesh filter section wetting the mesh as it does which enables the mesh to trap finer bits of crud, from there on to the engine.
hope this helps

I think thats basically the way it works with the exception the air is not actully sucked through the oil but flows downwards towards it, the heavy crap falls into the oil bath and air then turns upwards through mesh filters.

it might initially suck oil but only if the oil bath level is too high, when correctly filled there should be an air gap, on mine its about 1/4 inch when level. the baffle in the bottom stops the oil sloshing about too quickly on the inside but helps wet the mesh on the outside to trap the ligher bits of crap.

so metallicachick if it works as same as normal oil bath air filters youre right, it goes down the middle passing over oil first and then the mesh not other way round
