Here i think
right, just seen me mate being tugged down the road by the old rac man,
freelander in tow, hes just phoned me up to ask if the 1.8 engine is a safe one in regards to the valves hitting the pistons,or do they become very intimate and kiss and bend,i dont know as i dont mess with these engines.

tratta driver me hehe

No they are an "interference" type engine meaning theres no clearance between piston/valves if the cambelt goes... and then you cry...hence the importance of changing it..

Theres are few that are "Clearance" engines these days most have small tolerances to squeeze the most out of engine efficiency...the old Pinto engines were great for that, snap the belt and no foul fling on a new belt and away ya go..

He might have been lucky (unlikely) was he at tick over at the time or driving ? My mates went at traffic lights and got of lightly.. but if he was driving at the time.. :(

Methos.

cheers for that, i thought as much i,ll phone him in the mornin to let him cry,and arrange a meeting with the bank manager:eek: ,his missus was driving up hill at the time so probably doing 30-35ish,told him to expect the worst any road. heard abit about liners slipping as well due to impact.any truth in it?and as for pintos remember them well, very sideways memories hehehe!
at least i aint gotta fix this one, know bugger all about em!

I bet she block gear changed down a cog or two just before the belt snapped. When was the belt last changed?

There is a cam sensor on the newer k-series and the VVC version, if the timing is way off it just kills the engine. Usually the damage is already done by that stage.

Normally the valves just bend, in which case its a valve refit or exchange the head.

Piston crown damage should be inspected and possible liner fracture is worst case scenario.

i think you could be right as she was going up the hill at the time,i told him before he bought it to get them to change it as the milage was smack on 70000 as part of the deal in the purchase 12 MONTHS ago:eek: he said he forgot, glad i aint fix it,told him to expect the worst:D

Nothing to do with freelanders but the pinto engine is the old ford BDA engine and two out of the three sizes will smash the pistons into the valves. I think the 1800cc is the safe one but not possitive.

dunno yet only spoke to the pleb on the phone earlier to see how he,s gettin on with it.
as soon as i find out i,ll post it.
should be interesting though:D
