afternoon everyone, my 96 disco 300tdi decided to go wrong, when i start her up (no probs first turn) theres a lot of smoke (black smells of fuel) an she sounds like she's missing :( the smoke is quite heavy until the engine is warmed an then it lessens, i have put a new fuel filter on an there is no sed filter, i can`t see any breather pipes off anywhere so i`m at a loss of what could be causing this, someone said the lift pump but i disconneted it an that seems to pump ok, any ideas people??? also anybody recommend any landy mechanics who can help me in the manchester area?

thanks for replys, will have to check the pipe after the turbo think the 1 before is ok will double check, the EGR i removed, i did clean all the pipes after this was done (over a year ago) loadsa sticky muck in the return pipe they did seem ok then tho,

ok had a search around the forum possible things i haven't checked, cyclone breather an pipes, valve stem oil seals and the pump timing could it be any of these? or am i in the wrong area? also someone mentioned injectors, maybe this could cause it?

Stem seals possibley as when the car is left the fluid will settle and on start up will burn off whatever is there and once warmed up will lessen as it won't get chance to form and settle

ty rich i can lift the rocker cover to check these rite? gonna get my cousin to look coz i 'm not so sure what i'd be looking for or would it be obvious?

valve stem seals give blus smoke ,injecots are 2 stage and can give bad fuelling at idle but alright at running speeds blue smoke oil ,black smoke excess fuel ,white smoke unburnt fuel

thanks for your help mate, sorry bout the late reply, been busy over xmas, i`m gonna get the injectors tested in the new year see where its at after that....

ok ....today found out what was causing the smoke...was cylinder no.4 the arm had snapped an the piston was flappin about...big crack in the block....so time to pop a new engine in got a decent 1 i put away a while back just needs a few things swapping over
