My 200tdi smokes on start up its blue smoke........ once its driven it clears almost straight away and runs sweet.

It was overfilled with oil about a litre when i got it. I have drained it to the proper level.

I have check the inlet hose where it meets the inlet manifold and there was a bit of oil in there, i also noticed a tiny bit in front of the turbo intake but it wasn't a great deal.

I wondering if its, turbo related or if thats making me bark up the wrong tree and its valve guide seals.................

Its a tough one, im gonna do a oil change soon and clean out the breathers.

Anyone shed some light?

If it clears pretty much straight away it's not a problem. Probably a combination of some oil that's found it's way into the cylinders through the valve guides and/or some unburnt diesel. It's a common "fault" an many landy engines.

valve stem seals, if u get 1 of those fancy valve spring compressors from fleabay you can change them without takeing the head off, i also have a spare set of seals if u want them.

Thank you m8

Il take a quick look at the bay.........

I wouldnt bother with it, giving yourself a load of work for nothing. Cars used to **** oil out them all the time down the valve stems, you might get a bit of carbon build up in the engine tho, but in them days they used to put redex in the petrol to cure that.

When you do your oil change, if the guides and seals are real bad then the oil you pour in will run down the guides and you will get clouds of smoke on start up, but even then it will run fine.

I had an old 1300 riley kestral when I was a boy, twin carb fokir and went like **** until the subframe died. Anyway it was bad, going down the gears it would suck oil in and then put foot down and woosh a cloud of oily smoke. Never worried me.

Never had any money either so another reason it never got done.

I should have said aswel, make sure it aint the injectors dribbling on turn off, thats not good. Switch off then crack all the pipes a bit to let the pressure out and see if it still smokes on start up next time, if it dont get em out.

Remember to tighten the pipes back up of course.

what i said will more than likely fix the problem, it has on mine, its not expensive if you do it yourself, if you can be arsed to take the head off and have a vavle spring compresor the seals are about 80p each, so about 7 quid and a days work, oh and a replacment head gasket about a tenner.

cheers for the comments.........

I think il change the oil and give it a go then if it does blow shed loads of blue i know that its the guide seals.............

Its not a huge issue, bit of peace of mind i guess, its no major drama to whip the head off and do the seals.

Thanks again its nice just to have a 2nd opinion!

delayed answering because i wanted to make sure on mine ........

my 300tdi was overfilled with oil by about 2ltrs when i got it, drained it to correct level but used to get a small blue plume on start up. spent an afternoon removing the intercooler and cleaning it out with petrol, then removed the inlet manifold and cleaned that. i could pour oil out of the inlet before i cleaned it, but now its spotless i never get any blue smoke at all. im unsure of which seal let the oil in, and doubt il bother finding out, but before you start whipping heads off and stuff i'd clean out the inlet manifold - worked for me

Thanks Mark i think i read about your oil issues before, I cant figure out how the oil would find its way up there, maybe its something to do with the breathers.....

I will whip the breather off and clean it anyway, the intercoolers an easy one to remove for a clean too.....

Best do that oil change first though!!!

Thanks again :)
