Hi guys really need some advice I've just bought a 2004 td4 and it seems to smoke and sound quite rough till it has warmed up and a strong smell of diesel also I've tried blanking off the egr hose but does not seem to make any difference any advice would be very useful

Can also be low fuel pressure. If they are any good they will check everything - there're quite a lot of possibles for this one as well as duff injectors.

Ok spoke to a landrover technician today he has suggested that injectors would more than likely be the last resort , and to replace the crank case breather filter and another valve next to it and to get some fuel injection cleaner into the fuel first, and see how that goes .
Would anyone recommend I get this egr blanking plate as my egr valve seems to be totally blocked? ?

Yes get a egr blank and the bmw cyclone crankcase breather and try a little 2 stroke oil in your diesel works great

This subject has to be one of the oldest FL1 chestnuts.
I have followed ALL the advice on this but the bloody thing still does it and no one has ever come up with a definitive answer.

That's because there is no definitive answer.

you have a wrong fuel mixture when cold, but not when warm.

- You need more fuel when cold slightly, so marginal fuel pressure can cause this.
- You need glo plugs to help start when cold, so bad glo plugs can cause this.
- You need more fuel when cold, so if the engine management isn't picking up the cold correctly the mixture will be wrong.
- your injectors may not perform properly when cold

plus one

plus if the egr is full of junk wouldn't hurt to clean out the inlet manifold

take out the maf and map sensor, give them a good clean with a decent electrical cleaner, be gentle with them

check ur intercooler hoses that there not collapsing ,lastly could replace ur air filter while changing to a bmw crankcase filter

Just ordered the blanking kit for the egr valve should have it all replaced tomorrow I guess I'll just have to see how that goes thanks for the advice guys will keep you updated

Ok so I've changed the ccb valve changed the egr valve just about to put some injector cleaner in with the fuel if it still smokes after that am I right in thinking it could be an injector problem? ?

Just an update had all 4 injectors out and checked today and all are or ok so they have suggested looking into the timing being out now, will they ever get to the bottom of this problem? ?
