Smoking after overrun and stop start

A new development in my 300tdi saga.

It has now started smoking blue oil smoke after a long downhill on the overrun or if the engine has been on a reasonable trip and then stopped and then started again. It does it most if I stop at traffic lights and it idles for a while then pull away.

We are not talking clouds of smoke, but a blue haze. There is nothing at constant speed or under boost.

I have cleaned the cyclone breather out, and turbo inlet pipes. Doubt it's rings. It does breathe a bit which lets the oil cap hover.

Planning to do head gasket ASAP and stem seals to see if that sorts it. There is a faint smell of antifreeze so poss steam and oil.

Just sold my EVO 6 so the Landy is my only car, and needs to be as good as poss.
 
Blue is burning engine oil, Turbo seals, valve guides/seals, sounds like valve guides/seals if you get it after over run, sucking oil down the inlet guides, new stem seals and check wear on guides, move valve up 8mm any more than 0.15mm side ways movement and valves/guides are shot.

Took head off tonight. I think the head gasket had been leaking for a while, there were various places it looked iffy. All except one of the stem seals are at the top of the valve stem, so it's likely that's the cause of the smoke. There is more wear on cylinder no 3 than the rest, and the cylinder had water in the piston, even though I drained the block before I started doing anything, the other 3 Pistons were dry.

Head rebuild tomorrow night and back together for now. Tempted to get a spare block or motor and rebuild it ready!
 
Back together, much quieter, no smoke so far. I will need to sort the no 3 cylinder bore at some point. After looking up the available Pistons, it looks like I can get + 20 and +40 thou, which should take out the wear. I have the option of a untested 300 motor locally, complete with turbo and FIP for £150. I'm thinking that it may be worth it if the bores are ok. The local machine shop guy said just bore it and new Pistons. But I'd rather rebuild a spare engine, and swap them if it is in ok condition. Hmmm lots of thinking to do.
 
At least if you have the spare engine you can rebuild at your leisure and only have the landy off the road for a day or so when you come to do the swap. I wouldn't mind having a spare engine, g/box, t/box and diff all ready to go but space is limited at the moment (too many other toys). Reminds me to get back house hunting!!
 
Spare engine bought, and stripped ancillaries. Turbo seems good, alternator spins. Stripped off the head, and apart from the masses of oily soot from the egr which has half filled the inlet ports, it seems good. No bore wear on any cylinders and even a few parts that were dodgy on mine, like the fuel pump boost pipe and the little p shaped water pipe on the thermostat housing. Both of mine had split and been bodged. I'm going to build up the engine with new bits as necessary and swap motors. Only issue I can see on the motor is the thread on the top diaphragm cap banjo bolt of the FIP is dodgy, so if anyone has a spare cap of a duff pump I would be interested.
