Back again, managed to get the classic 1994 3.9 V8 running but boy does it smoke, statement, not question. It's blue smoke so oil related I assume (I've been wrong before LOL) and, as I can't afford to replace the engine, or have the wherewithal to strip this one, does any-one have ideas I could try to cut this down to a manageable level, well one that would pass MOT emission test? I've seen various piston sealants and engine restorers on fleabay, anybody had any luck with any? As usual, all help much appreciated. Thanks.

Valve stem oil seals and or piston rings. Snake oil won't stop that. It may improve with more running, but will never be right until it's sorted properly.

Could also be your valve stem seals, has it been sat for a while not running?
There are plenty of "just for now" additives but they are only provisional and never a good fix. If in doubt strip it out and fix the bugger.
But... Your budget as you say is the final word ;)

Thanks Mark, it had been standing for nearly a year when i bought it. Is there any alternative to a strip down please?

Could be gummed up / Stuck Oil control rings from being sat..

Change the oil and thrash the tit's off it...

You could also drop some neat redex down the bores and leave it for a few days to eat away the carbon around the rings..

Spin it over to clear them out once marinaded, then take it for a good drive....

"compression test first though" ;)

Try the tips given and see how you get on, unfortunately the current climate might not allow a good long run unless you shop in Scotland or Cornwall...

Brilliant advice as usual, I'll do what you've said Henry_b sounds like things I can do, Redex, oil and filter ordered in the hope the compression test is 'successful' (ever the optimist, typical Land Rover owner?!) . Be nice to take it for a run Mark but it's off the road (in a farm yard) with no MOT, so, as work progresses, there'll be more posts. Stay safe people.

Fresh petrol or the stuff that's sat in it for the year or more?

Any idea whether it was like this before you bought it?

Petrol gauge warning light was on so 5 gallons of fresh put in. The smoke didn't seem excessive when I started it on first inspection (never over revved as it was in a tight confined space, not taken for a run as I wasn't buying a pristine car, it was bought on the understanding it had been standing for a year and the price paid reflected that) nor when the seller put it on the trailer, it's only giving it a bit of stick when it was parked up that the problem became evident, it has had new dizzy, cap, leads, plugs and coil and, on removal, the plugs were well oiled up so I presume it must have had the problem previously.

Along with all of the above,.Check the crankcase ventilator sometimes the pipes chock up with emulsified oil ..Back pressure can push oil past the rings,Mind if you have back pressure that can put oil through the ventilator ..viscous circle .....:(......RR

Causes the crankcase to pressurise & oil leaks out of all sorts of interesting places.
My 3.5EFi had this problem when I bought it. The passageway in the plenum body was blocked solid.

Cheers Ratae, plenum body off is a relatively easy manoeuvre from what I can see plus, I have a spare to check before removing the one in situ, thanks, peanuts01
