Smokey Rocker Box and Oil filled Air Filter

Seems to be a common problem with the 19j, ive got the rear rocker breather to atmos at the moment, only because the rocker cover was nacked so put a n/a one on without the breather pipe attachment.

Im going for a replacement rocker with corect connection, a catch tank between breather system and airbox and also going to breath to atmosphere if necessary using a small breather filter also available on a well known auction site eb**

Never had an oily filter and engine runs sweet at 70mph no probs, rebuilt :) 7yrs ago

New prob over last few days, breather cap popping out, may be seal on it or an increase in pressure in the rocker??? Anybody exp this problem???

Cheers Andy

Blocked breather pipe maybe.

Just read this thread, I have the same problem.

I replaced my oil soaked air filter with a new one and to stop it getting soaked in oil I took off the breathr pipe from the oil filler cap and taped up the air filter end.

Now theres a LOT of white smoke coming from the exhaust, out the filler cap and the turbo.

I'm worried, what should i do?

Sam

I just removed the pipe from the air filter and let it hang down the side. You get a small puff of smoke from under the wing when accelerating hard. Have a bit of board on the garage floor to soak up the few drops of oil.

mines got to 166k without a problem like this so would not be too woried, as for the engine putting out loads of white smoke sounds as if its gone a bit further then the one that started the thread.....

You could rebuild (new rings, new head set, new big end bearings, and prob new pistons as they have a habit of cracking on 19J.) I have decided to leave the head on and not look as i don't want to know!

If its smoking that bad it may be time (like mine is getting there) to either flog it to somebody who does not have an idea whats wrong, or get a 200tdi engine.

sam, what youvve done there is sealed off the breather system with tape. So, the pressure is going somewhere, forcing oil vapor past the pistons and past the turbo seals.

Take the tape off an think about why the breather system was made!

Same thing with mine ( gumming up the air filter ) , Al Ive done is remove the hose from the breather + air filter , blank off the filter side . long bit of hose and jubley clipped to the filler cap and run the pipe down the N/S inner wing so it vents to atmoshere . ( but mine isnt Throwing oil out tho just vapour ) .

Also take off your filler cap and give it a damn good clean ( pressure washers ace for that ) .
Had No probs whatso ever doing it this way :) .
