Got my series three Landy back in March had only one owner very little had been done to it over it past 40 years so stipend it down to just chassis and rebuilt from there up .Had to replace part of the chassis and repair or replace most other parts pass it MOT though .
It is a diesel and smoked a bit so had the pump and injectors all rebuilt and had a spare head fully done at the engine rebuild shop fitted all on over last few days only to still have lots of smoke at idle (blue) will advance the pump timing a bit to se if it helps, Ihad set it all up using protractor an timing marks and it fired up straight away so must be close. Any suggestions to help lessen smoke would be good
Cheers Neil

Piston rings?. Could just need settling in. My series3 was the same, smoked a fair bit especially when cold but after using it for a few hundred miles it is much cleaner.

Advanced timing till no rattle at excelaration and a lot less smoke now so can live with that ,pistons had at least 1mm gap between piston and cylinder wall so will look at short block over hall at some stage ,I have a block with damage from a loose hot spot would need a mm ground off the top of the block to sort it would this be an option

Welcome to LZ Neil, not sure you could deck a diesel block 1mm down, they already run very high compression ratio, you would also need to machine piston crowns down to suit and it would significantly reduce the strength of the coolant passages beneath the surface of the deck
You could ask an engine rebuild/machine shop they could outline all the possibilities, who knows it could be a goer.
Most comprehensive engine overhauls include a "light cut" over the block surface but diesels with such close tolerances between pistons and heads need special considerations.
Try posting your question in the "series landrover" section of the forum you'll find all the answers there.

Gosnays do a thing called a savershim just for this eventuality, I only know of them used on petrol classic cars but I think they also do them for Diesel engines. Martyn
