Smell

Hi all don't no if this is anything to worry about but in the last week i have smelt diesel in the car and when you walk in front it smells quite strong i have looked under the bonnet and cant seem to see any leak the fuel filter is dry around the top and there don't seem to be any wet patches i want to have a good look tomorrow and was wondering if anyone has had this prob and could give me a place to start as i say it is quite strong when you stand by the grill. steam clean it then find the leak....

leak off pipe very common

take off the long black plastic cover in the middle of the cyl head,underneath you will see some thinish black cloth covered pipes.these are leak off pipes,it is these that normally leal or break.get some new pipe from halfrauds or where ever and replace them,should cost about a fiver.

As above, leakoff pipes cause this. But if you want to repair them for ever, get hold of some 3/32 bore silicone vacuum pipe and use that. It will outlast the Rangie.

Any suggestions where I could buy the pipe by mailorder? Not sure where I might find it here in France

Thank you all for your advice i took the cover off and could see in the seat of one of the injectors a pool of diesel in there so i have changed the leak off pipes and will keep an eye on it i checked the injector pipe and is tite on the injector so fingers crossed it was coming from the leak off pipes

Yes Ebay. Just search silicone vac hose. Not cheap but the best by far. Got some for my Porsche 928 but stole a bit for Rangie. Be sure to get 3/32 though, 1/8 is too slack a fit.

i used 3/32 vac hose seems to fit ok

Thanks for that, they do 2mm or 3mm. 3/32 = 2.38mm, which will fit best do you think? 1/8 = 3.175mm and is too big according to Wammers.

I can't find 3/32 or 2.5mm on Ebay so far.

No neither can i now but the stuff i got was 3/32. But 3mm should be ok 4mm too big. 1/8 would do but is not as tight a fit as the 3/32 i used.

i would say 2mm if you can't get 2.5mm as 3mm would be a bit loose.

get a meter of 2 mm,if it fits ok,not cost a lot will it.

Thanks Wammers, it's not expensive so I'll give 3mm a go

why not but the correct pipe,it will last 5 years plus.plus it is cheap to buy.

no,go 2mm,then it will not leak or come of will it.

there is that the proper stuff is cheep i only used 3/32 as i had it there

sorry it go off subject Gemsdad but i need to get under my rr to check my trans box but im afraid to get under it. is it ok to put the front up on ramps the thought of getting a leek in the eas while im under it scares me

The chances of that happening are as rare as hens teeth. But to be on the safe side either use an axle stand under the chassis or use your bottle jack under the chassis at one side with a block of wood. If it falls it gives you a chance of getting out. First rule of thumb in the garage trade is NEVER go under a vehicle supported only by a jack ALWAYS use axle stands.
