small steering wheels

ok , run into issues fitting my cobra buckets with the bus steering wheel in my 90.....i can "just about" fit but its not easy. a smaller wheel would be top of the list.

found a couple of options of the 14 inch variety.

RDX SLIMLINE Steering Wheel Boss LandRover 90 110 36 spline 1983 - 1989 | eBay

first up is the RDX wheel with slim line boss - this will cancel indicators as well i see and be close to original position so stalks in reach.

LAND ROVER DEFENDER SPORTS STEERING WHEEL + 36 SPLINE BOSS KIT - S350FBC/SPR115 | eBay

this one - it has a flat bottom which appeals for making it easier to get in and out but its unclear how deep the boss is nor if it has the indicator pins on the back.

Alternatives welcome - i guess in an ideal world id buy the rdx slimline boss and the springalex flat bottom wheel but 100 quids really the top end of my budget as it is and the boss is 65 quid + the wheel is 50.

I guess only real downside is it will require more effort and more turns to turn my wheels ?

itll be the same number or turns lock to lock

effort wise... not much difference to be honest. A smaller wheel will at least "appear" to make the slop in the steering look alot better :bolt:

i wouldnt worry to much about the indicator cancelling pins, mine didnt come with any and i just drilled and tapped it for a couple o' M3 bolts.

I got a momo replica wheel from ching tong for about £18 from memory and ok its not leather but it looks smart!

see ive seen them - but then i watched a few reviews on youtube.....

i regard my wheel as safety critical and some of those china wheels they reviewed were shocking - one nardi replica bent like a banana in use then snapped.

the nardi with the same treatment was solid as a rock.

i r skeptic , how ever for 18 quid and a recomendation from someone whos used one i would be tempted.

and i could stick it on the slimline RDX boss and all would be good ?

Should be fine.

Im sure in the event of a crash mine will bend. But if I have a big crash in a fender' itll be the least of my worries!

This is the style of the one I bought -

The Materials used are a bit ... crap

And DO NOT use the crappy fasteners supplied. Get some decent hardened ones. The cheap monkey metal ones chew up. And get a bit of threadlock on them n'orl when you attach it to your boss.

To be fair the 'nardi' ones you are looking at have much less material in them than the sort I have. And mine is definetely made from recyled coke cans or some such. Its not exactly 6001!

Still you pays yer monies and yer takes yer choice and all that.

agree , think im gonna go for the spring alex i linked to. at 78 quid inc boss.. found one without the blue anodising ****e on it. and like you say i can always just drill and tap holes for the indicator cancelation , im resourceful.

thats not anodising, thats a plastic protection film to protect the plastic chrome bits on the steering wheel. Itll peel off.

The boss included in yer £70 set also doesnt have a collapsible section so wont absorb some energy in the event of a crash - so yer more likely to break yer wrists.... or yer rib cage

gotcha paul but the low profile height of the boss is what im going for thats whats keeping the cost up. that momo boss is quite high, google reveals im not the only one with this issue. i dont want to bring my wheel back at my ass. as i have long arms as it is and in a truck cab just a general lack of room all over.

just having a think about this.

standard defender wheel doesnt have a crushable zone.

i think im just gonna order the RDX stuff. at least its easy to send back if its ****e and it will be here by weekend so i can get my interior done. stuff from ching tong might be here by end of month - who knows and good chance i wont be here at end of month !

If you get stuck I have a boss you can have for free, no slack at all, can even steer from the back seat, got a vice like grip (on my wallet) and has squishey padding bits, no built in indicator things but you will certainly know what IS indicated, as I said free but will require regular maintenance.

they are choofin expensive to keep maintained! And if (when) you get sick of it, they will take everything you own!

head goes clunk - thats a hard plastic cover in the middle not soft squishy ****.
