I have a 1999 Discovery Series II and in need of a small block. I am here in
Phoenix, Arizona and would like to start here. Anything useful would be
greatly appreciated.

I've got a piece of Lego. 4 blob, in yellow. Is that small enough?

_Best_... ( if you haven't the facility) is to get someone with a lathe to
turn you up a set of pulleys... you could use UHMWP ( plastic) as I've
done, or brass. Drill a couple of plates and high tensile bolts and you're
away!!

With a simple double four a ten year old could haul your machine out of a
swamp !! Hehhehheh.............. What about a simple 'Spanish Windlass' ?
( They work!!!) Rigger's synthetic rope and a couple of pipe lengths....
or branches. .... Then again, there's always a High Lift jack ends
on........ or better.. a Tirfor !!!

Seriously, get a few wheels turned up and make one y'self! Y'll save
heaps. Buy some beaut rope from a chandlers..... if you want a block, that
is. ..... I have one! It's invaluable! ( But I've also used a Spanish
Windlass ( rope and two branches) with a bogged VW on a 'backtrack' many
years ago!!!)...... the mechanical advantage of a Spanish Windlass is
amazing!!

,,,, frodo.

Maybe it's just me, but i thought vinearnold was asking for a small block,
as in a small block chevy as distinct from a big block chevy. I may well be
wrong, but i think you may have to be a little more specific in you question
Vinearnold.

My thoughts as well, Sam. Pains me to say it, but assuming it is the bare
engine block you are after (dreaded slipped-liner syndrome, perchance?) then
contact RPI. You could also try J.E.Motors, then again, I'd imagine any
competent engineering shop your side of the pond could bore out the old
liners and install new top-hat ones??

Maybe they're 'blocks' for playing with in your 'shop...... some do this,
_always_ playing with their blocks, they are !!! The absolute 'height' of
their passion is playing with their blocks.
When these types were just mere sprogs they had blocks. Square wooden
prisms with pictures and letters and colours 'n' stuff. They _loved_ 'em.
THEN... as they got older, y'know, 'puberty' an' that, they found that
there were other blocks to play with...... and the discovery of Landrover
World just opened up a whole new galaxy of ENGINE blocks !!! As well!!!

However,... there _are_ also blocks used by those who like to 'get out'
and need 'em gettin' out of where they shouldna got in !!! Hehhehheh. The
initial poster didn't say !!! One who was never fixated on 'playing with
his blocks' could be forgiven for assuming the line taken. ( in error ??)

So.... if it's 'engine blocks' you're after to 'play with'..... go for it
!!! There're _always_ ' horses for courses', even in "Landy World" !!

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. My apologies for the irrelevence
of my 'discourse' on blocks and "Spanish Windlass" thoughts. ..........
Wrong mental set, I guess. :))) ....... won't happen again,...... be sure
of it !!

..... frodo.

Apology graciously accepted Frodo.

I certainly did struggle to follow your rather convoluted post, but i think
i've got a rough idea now. Are you sure it's not "playing with your
bollocks"???

Sam.

G'day Sam....

Thanks for seriously reading my insights above and cutting to the core.

Yessss!!....Should the contraction have been written as " b'locks " ? Is
_this_ your question, Sam ?......Those who "choose to play with their
bollocks"......Good God!!!.. Now there's _another_ twist in this
'convoluted thread' !! Who would have thought !! You are a _Lateral
Thinker_, Sam ! ..Hehhehheh...... More twists than in a wound up Spanish
Windlass, anyway, eh !

Usually such players ( with bollocks) _can_ be distinguished, though.
There's a lot of 'em down in the city coffee shops ! The persistent
holding it too often, too tight and too long causes a cerebral blood
deficiency and they can't think straight..... or even crooked, for that
matter. They're _certainly_ incapable of playing with 'engine blocks' or
'tackle blocks' or 'playblocks' ! But b'locks they can and _do_.
Incessantly!!...... Rumour has it that some even go _blind_ ........ so
their playing is even more narrowed...... from a visual perspective,
anyway. Ya don't usually see any over the ranges for any real distance.

So, for the readers of this b'locked thread, like the public dunny blocked
with a roll or two...... better we avoid it, eh!!......... But_best_, as
Landy Lovers, we stick to 'our' BLOCKS.( no contraction there!)....
whether engine _or_ tackle.

A 'Tackle' block will get you out of where you should'na _got_, ...and
back. Whereas a bad engine block won't even enable you to even get
there!!....
............. Which is where this thread, which began with a poster simply
asking about a friggin' "small block" ( did he/she want a Mini Minor
engine block into a SIII, maybe??... are there small, medium and large
blocks, perhaps??) , or more likely a small "tackle block"...... or who
friggin' knows?

Our original poster, having placed us in the quandry of 'what blocks?' ,
has deserted this thread. I wonder why ? Too much b'locks, I
reckon.....Hehhehhehheh.

I note that you're also here in Oz, Sam..... The sun gets to us from time
to time, doesn't it... and we just break out the bull**** and beers. Just
wanted to lay some of our Oz diversion on the OS masses, didn't we, mate.
No kangaroos loose in the top paddocks around here, eh??? Wannanother
tube?

Now...Back to your blocks, lurkers! Show's over ! Hehhehheh. ( Should
that one have been a contraction??)

Catchya 'roun', Sam. :)))

..... frodo.

Couldn't agree with you more about the coffee shops and apparently
high-density of bollock-holders. Although i seriously doubt our now departed
lurker would have been asking about putting a mini engine in his landy.
could you imigine that?? you'd have to rev the thing up to 8 grand just to
get the old heap moving.

and yes, i am in Oz. Melbourne myself, how about you Frodo?? i've only had
the landy for about 2 months (been a landy-nut for about 2 years though) and
loving it. whenever you see another series driver on the road, the look as
surprised as me. always give them a wave. had a chat to a 110 county owner
while we were stopped at the traffic lights a couple of days ago. great fun.

Sam.

_Never_ take my feeble jocularity seriously, Sam!!.....Just threw the
'mini-block' in as a 'filler' for the one-time requested 'small block'. (
Though I still reckon a Spanish Windlass , providing you're in timber
country can be a lifesaver. :)) )

As for the coffee shop b'lock holders..... I've just come back from a run
down your way out to Warrnambool ( _quality_ town) along the Gr. Oc. Rd.,
up through the east Wimmera then across to the 'alps' through Skipton.
Camped at Corryong ( near Khancoban) then back up through Tumbarumba via
the NSW central west ( where I lived for some years) and then 'home' to my
patch up the coast of NSW..... about 100ks or so from Newcastle.

Did about 3500ks down your way, all up. Funny roads those out west of
Skipton, eh ? Two metres of bitumen strip centered along a fifteen metre
wide dirt road going _straight_ to the horizon and flat as a tack for 360
!!! Didn't see a soul for hours!!
_Really_ beaut country down your way, though, which I hadn't seen !!
Gonna see a bit more of it sooner or later. Maybe up around Omeo around
Xmas. But, generally, experienced _Great_ variations in terrain in such a
relatively small area...... and weather, too !!! Gees, _four_ seasons in
a day along the coast!!!
But a must-see-more part of Oz, I reckon.

> and yes, i am in Oz. Melbourne myself, how about you Frodo??....

See above.

Yeah... good machine, eh. I've got a 1997 Defender 110 TDi300. No
complaints apart from I'd like a wider driving pos. though....... Two
Hundred pounds of Heavenly Joy ( as I've growed to!) shoulder packs the
drive seat to the door. With the window open it's OK.

I've still got a Landcruiser HJ45... a real tank but it has it's uses.
It's indestructable!! Before that I've owned two Toyota FJ40's. ........
The coils on the Landy leave the old Toyota leaf springs for dead !!

So, there y'are, Sam....... And not _all_ coffee shops blocked with b'lock
bashers. I went out to St. Kilda and had a cup or two while I 'surveyed'
the masses and the Bay. Wide range of players, but the coffee was the best
I've tasted. ... Ha!!!.Down at the Victoria Markets I had the _worst_ I've
ever tasted..... a bit like washed-dog waste water.

Uphold the Landy banner down there in Texas, Sam. I only saw two or three
others in the whole trip through that Great South Land of yours !.... and
one of them was in a parking lot at Docklands !!

Best wishes,

..... frodo.

No doubt about it, those hj45's are bloody tough old bastards. i just sold
my hj45 troopy to a bloke in USA (a little concerning how many of these are
going to america). I'll be honest, the 'cruisers are a much better vehicle
than the old landys. handles much better, better ergonomics, better view,
better donk, more load-space, much better g'box. no suprise to me that rover
lost all the 4x4 business to the Japs when they made cars that were so far
ahead. the troopy gearbox feels like a modern sedan compared to the heap of
**** between the motor and transfer box in my series 3 landy.

in conclusion, don't know why i went for the landy, they just have that
certain something you can't get from any other vehicles. just how to
describe it, i'm not too sure, but it's certainly there.

Sam.
