hi all

my hippo has developed a really annoying problem when going into 4th gear. sometimes when its cold like coming home from work today as soon as i put it in 4th it wont rev over 2500 and wont go above 50. yet this morning on the way to work it was fine. im really stumped as to why it does it, as and when it feels like it, and isnt consistent with when it does it.

any ideas??

Not much info to go on here!

So here are some questions.

Have you checked the turbo hoses for holes or splits, at around 2500rpm - especially the 90 degree one?

When was the pcv changed? Is it the BMW upgraded part?

pressure and /or oil coming up the tube?

Any smoke when you have this loss of power?

Singvogel.

hi yeah sorry bout the lack of info but i had no idea where to even start looking :/ so ill get all that checked out

cheers pal

hi

yeah ive gt a new k&n air filter coming for it but your probably not wrong with it needing a service. only had it 2 months but i think its done a good 10,000 miles since the last owner had one done. its something ive been meaning to do but what with the weather being so s**t it keeps geting put on hold. only had chance to do the oil. hopefully on sunday ill get the turbo hoses checked out and then get around to doing the air and fuel filter and the pcv valve.

realy appriciate the help!

Fuel pump

Always start with the simple things - if it only needs a fuel filter, there is no point changing the fuel pump. If you ARE going to change the fuel pump, you should fit a new filter anyway (unless its nearly new) so best just change the filter first anyway before jumping off the deep end with stuff that might not be needed.

this sounds like a turbo vane actuator linkage sticking , ,
check the linkage is free to move,
it is operated by a vacuum solenoid device, related to the plenum chamber pressure, map sensor, if over pressure is detected it will go into a limp home mode, it usually clears and resets itself after engine shut down ,and the linkage returns to its normal position

hi all

i got the a fuel filter and air filter going in it tuesday but just coming home today and its spitting out puthers of black smoke :/ from what i can tell its a combustion problem, but hopefully changing the filters should sove this. but the turbo is worrying me because acceleration is down and the tempremental 4th gear thing. so i think that definately needs adressing.

many thanks again

chris

finally got to the root of the problem!! theres a big split in the hose going into the turbo which has been causing my accelaration issues. not enough air for correct combustion plus because of this my air filter has been sucking dirty air. changing the hose and filter and my problems should be sorted :D
