When cold (only on occasions) my Defender 90 TD5 is extremely slow off the mark. 55k miles. After about 3 minutes it perks up and zooms off. Could this be down to the ERG?
Thanks in anticipation.

Thank you for your input guy's
Clutch? Feels more like brake drag, massive lack of power but only for a short period Vinlander.
I ask the question about the ERG as I am not sure what symptoms are for a sick ERG.

One potential symptom of a sick EGR would appear to be its letters get moved around to ERG :D
If you think it may be brakes dragging a simple check would be to dip the clutch (or knock it into neutral) whilst rolling (with the lack of power symptom still present) and see how well it freewheels. If that is ok you have eliminated road brakes, transmission brake and drive train in one hit. If it is dragging wait until it is back to normal then stop and feel the transmission brake drum on the back of the transfer box, if it feels warm / hot it is dragging and may need re-adjusting, cleaning or cable replacement A dragging road brake would generally make it feel like it is pulling to one side.

Check the MAF sensor. If it is buggered only buy a Genuine or Siemens, the rest will fail in a matter of weeks. Failed MAF can cause this issue, had it on mine a couple times.

Also yeah get rid of the E G R, plenty of blanking kits available for around £30.00, pretty easy to do as well.

I will check the rolling resistance when it happens again. Thanks Kwakerman!!
MAF sensor? Google..... here I come. EGR blanking kit also. Thanks bankz5152.

No worries :) MAF sensor sits in front of the airbox, like so -

Shouldnt do no. I have one as well no issues with that. Try unplugging the MAF and go for a drive, if its spritely and running well then you need a new one (genuine only), if the issue remains then it could be something else.

Yes because the ECU needs the MAF readings to accurately control fueling, without it the ECU defaults to 'best guess' which isn't ideal. Once replaced it should run even better. I would change your air filter at the same time, not totally necessary but I like to do it, to ensure nice clean air is hitting a new MAF!

Hi Bankz5152,
It has been running nicely in this hot weather so have held back on the purchase of the MAF. When it starts again I will unplug and order the unit. I will have a look for the MAP sensor and give that a wipe with thinners which I guess would be similar to brake cleaner.
