Slow to respond rev counter

To add to my list of woes with the poor ole dear, the RPM counter is now lagging behind the actual revs. It only happens some of the time, but it's quite common. i.e. you put you foot on the accelerator, you can hear the engine speed up, then a few seconds later the rpm counter catches up.

I'm guessing it's a sensor, but does any one have a quick answer as to where I should be looking?

Alternator. The small wire to the spade connector will be corroded/almost off. I took mine apart and soldered them together, but most people reckon a crimped connection is more usual.

i had an intermitent fault on my discovery rev counter. it would work then suddenly drop to zero and a few seconds later jump back up to the correct revs.
remove your instrument panel and unscrew the ( 3 if i remember right) little scres holding the rev counter in then clean the copper circuit on the plastic sheet thing on the back of the cluster with fine wire wool replace the screws and it should work ok.
the problem i found was a poor connection between the copper circuit and the rev counter.

I had this on my old Disco 1...... as Paul D said, mine was the thin wire at back of alternator too

You're lucky Adrian, I once had an Alfasud where the rev counter jumped from 0 to 7000 revs in time with the left turn indicator's flashing ..... now them's electrics for you!

yes check the wire on the alternator and while your there check the voltage its throwing out aswell
