Well main bearings normally rumble and I doubt you would get them out without an engine out.

You are going to have to find out if it is the bottom end, and more likely the big ends which you can change if the crank aint too badly scored. But start with an oil pressure check.

Hope all the normal stuff is ok like oil and filter is up to date.

Big ends normally knock on start up from cold until the oil light goes out, and then when really hot if you blip the throttle fairly hard.

If you get one of them stefoscopes off ebay you can listen properly.

thanks guys it only seems too be doing it on tick over some days it sound bad some days it dont, seems to be when its cold could just be me as i have never had a desiel before

If you are new to diesels and esp 200tdi, then its probably you as they do sound like they are about to go bang if you compare with modern petrol engine. This is usually accentuated when cold and on a cold day as the air is denser and you get better combustion. If the knocking is about on a 4 beat then its most likely ok its when you get a single cylinder knock that you are indicating a problem.
When you have covered a few miles and its not gone BANG then you confidence will build. They usually cover very high mileages without much bother. HTSH ;)
