Hi everyone!

Haven't been around for a bit, but got meself a new baby (of the Green Oval variety) and am looking forward to getting back into it (or under as is often the case!)

Anyway, recently I was driving along and heard a 1 - 2 second 'brrrrr' from the transmission and noticed the hi/low lever is now very loose.

It still engages each gear with the usual 'clunk', but it is then free to move back or forward to the threshold of the other gear where, again with the 'clunk' it will engage that gear. It remains in gear and the car, which is a '93 90 200TDi, drives ok. Just that the lever is no longer held in position as before.

Any ideas as to what might have happened and is the car ok to continue driving in this state?

Thanks sypher, I had another gander and all my linkages are present and correct and doing what they are supposed to. As I mentioned, the gears - both high and low, do engage, again with the usual 'clunk' and the car appears to drive fine in both, it's just that the lever is not retained in either position. Whatever held it firm is no longer there or working, ie there's no 'clunk' required to disengage the hi/low gears.

My main concern is if the car is still okay to drive. If some pin/collar/whatever has come away and from the sound of the original 'brrrr' that we heard, may have perished down among the gears, does it actually matter that the lever is loose?
