SIII G/box rebuild !!!!

Good evening to one and all on this very warm evening.
have some trouble with my box jumping out of gear and wondered weather its a
doable job to sort it out any input would be great and any tips also.
Never done this sort of job before !!!

Is it only jumping out of 2nd by any chance?

You'll have something of a learning curve, but anything is doable
given time...

Better off with a recon.

For what it'll cost you in parts, shims, and time it isn't worth doing
yourself unless you're some sort of gearbox pervert.

I rebuilt mine, three weeks later 3rd gear lost 3 teeth.
Then I got a recon box, which whined badly so I took the LR to the place I
got the gbox from and said u do it it's your fault and they did

Thats just boring!. some of us like to attempt jobs just because we
can

definately look like theyre full off all sort of interesting bits!..

Did a 4 speed cortina gearbox strip & re-build as part of my C&G 381 course 20 years ago. It was very
hard, but very rewarding.

Mind you, we never used it in a car!!!

Thanks for the bad points but I like a challenge, I have never dealt with
g/boxes before and would like to see what I can make of it, so where is the
best place to get the bits? has anyone used Land Rover for the gears and
shims etc: what would the expected price be for parts not counting my time
( put it down to a steep learning curve )

Good luck and please let me know how you get the reverse gear selector
back into the box, I gave up 20 years ago and fitted a secondhand box,
I still keep coming across various springs, dogs and gears to remind
me.

Good man! Go for it - the SII gearbox is simple to do (except for
getting it all back in the main box afterwards!) IF you make notes
on what went where when stripping it. The Haynes book if perefectly
adequate for the job, but you will need to *read* the relevant
sections several times to work out the lingo.

Also, if in doubt about the condition of a part, replace it, its
not worth spoiling the ship for a h'ape worth of tar.

Recons can be ok, but better the devil you know....... in my book.

That's my thoughts about better the devil you know than the devil you don't
????

Are there any pit falls that I need to beware of or is it just dive in and
go for it along with a digital camera!!!!

You need a *realy* clean area to work in, and all the crud needs to
come off the outside of the box before starting stripping. Also
bear in mind that some of the bits are heavier than you might think,
and there's sharp edges all over - mind those fingers.
