Found this big circlip on my driveway while I was taking off a rear brake disc to investigate a grinding sound (it was the brake shoes rubbing against the hub due to shoe clips popping out)
Any ideas where this big (approx 4 inch) clip came.from?

Thats a big circlip for the L322.
They do have some on the rear but from what I can see they are only 2 inches ish.
Do you own any other cars or niegbhours prone to practical jokes.

Something that big dont "just come off" unless you are taking stuff apart, go back over your work.

Was it before or during the work you found it?

I was hammering the rear disc (it was stuck on) to get it off and heard a weird sound from the front of the car. Walked around and saw this big clip about 2 feet in front of the car.

As said for something like that to come off is pretty difficult, unless you are in amoungst it.

I can only visulise the circlip that holds the bolts in a driveshaft diff joint, but dont think the L322 of your age has, Be nice if you told us what you have in the thread.

I would be checking both sides front and back to see if anything is missing/different.

Its a 2005 3l diesel auto. It started raining here so I haven't climbed under yet to investigate.

that looks like the circlip that holds the hub bearing in the front or rear hub housing are you sure the scaping noise is not a wheel bearing colasped and the brake disc rubbing on the caliper bolts

When I removed the rear brake disc/drum it was clear the brake shoe clips had pulled through and the shoes were leaning into the drum. No grinding sound now since replacing the clips with a small bolt.

Did you check the wheel bearing play as that might have caused the clips to pull through the shoes
the circlip that is in the wheel bearing hub is 100mm or 4 inches indiameter and is an internal one (that is the size that is on my discovery 3 I have just measured a new one that i will be fitting when i get back to Australia)

when i pressed out the bearing on my front hub instead of the hub being pressed through the bearing it pressed out the circlip and thats when it started to get hard as i could not get anything between the bearing and the hub to press it out and had to use a grinder to get the bearing off so it could have forced the circlip out .
