Another new boy here. Hello!

A slightly obscure question for this forum... but maybe someone can help. I've done a search and noone seems to have asked this before.

I'm emigrating to Australia in September: is it worth taking a 1999 P38 with me?

Talking to shipping companies they regularly do this: I've been quoted just under a grand for the Ro-Ro ship that sails from Southampton to Sydney (I didn't even know there was one until I did a bit of digging) or a bit less if I put it in a container.

The massive depreciation on Rangies in the UK doesn't seem to have hit the Australian market: a decent P38 SE in Sydney seems to have asking prices of about AU$20k - or 10k GBP at the current disasterous exchange rate. Customs duty is AU$400. Some back of the envelope calculations make this to be a very profitable sailing.

Cheeky to ask on a first post - but has anyone done this?

Oh, and and a real long shot... can you get a CD for the Sat Nav with Oz roads on it?

Thanks!

Gday,

Ive actually done it myself. I used to live in the UK, but now am back home n Aus. Your quote for the RORO is a good price.

There will be extra charges when you land.
- Customs duty
- GST (VAT) 10%
- Port Charges (unloading)
- Quarantine charges

Once landed, you need to register the vehicle.
- State registration fees & Insurance
- Inspection fee
- Compliance plate fees and engineers certificate

Its a bit of a hassle, but it can be done by yourself.

I would recommend bringing out a P38 Diesel as they were never imported here. The resale value would then be better. If its a petrol that you intend beringing out, I dont think I would bother. The money you save on the price of the car in GBP vs AUS would not be significant once you take in all the charges and fees as listed above.

Why, thank you kzrocky. It's good to hear it can work. The guys operating the ferry to Sydney say they've done "a few a year" so I guess others have spotted the price differential.

I could swap to a Diesel, but I hate the performance (or lack of...). Do you know if the Autobiography was sold in the sold in Oz - a petrol version I thought would be the best way to secure a premium in Australia?

If you chip the diesel and even better upgrade the intercooler (Jeremy Fearm) I think you would be happy with the performance. My diesel is as quick as the 4.6, believe it or not.

The autobiography was sold here. Heres a link for one currently for sale, its a 1998 for A$16000, or £7600

People want diesels here.

ps: Petrol costs currently $1.20 a litre (£0.57)
Diesel $1.15 a litre (£0.55)
