My P38 died again last week - driving down the M20 (what is it with me and Motorways in Kent???) and the alternator light came on, along with ALTERNATOR FAIL on the display, then the Power Steering went heavy so I immediately thought "belt", just as clouds of steam started to emanate from under the bonnet....

Limped to the Hard Shoulder, hopped out and took a look to find the belt shredded - bits of it were hanging down from under the bumper and clouds of steam were still issuing from the front of the engine.... and she sounded like a bucket of bolts - again!

Called the recovery outfit, called a friend to come and rescue the wife and kids and I settled down for a wait.

Eventually got recovered back to Dakar 4x4 were I left the Old Girl....

Immediate thoughts - if its the belt only, then not too bad, but if its overheated sufficently to warp the head, then I've got a really expensive paperweight with a green oval on the front! Got made redundant a few weeks back and haven't found anything else yet, so a large bill for repairs really can't be paid!

Anyhoo, got a call today, they are having to replace the Radiator as the belt seems to have taken it out - they are going to stick a secondhand one in out of one of the other wagons they have there to keep the cost down whilst they establish if the head is burgered too.....

Can hardly wait for the phone call in the morning!
