Its really up to you, some people on here will tell you they are great others will tell you to stay well clear and certain ones will tell you to set fire to it :D
Freelanders do have their faults but a lot of people like them

As others have said Freelanders do have their faults. But if you look into other cars on their relevant forums you will find they are no worse than others.
The non td4 diesel is better than the td4 for clutch hydraulics as the slave cylinder is external. They do have a dodgy clutch bracket but its easy to replace and cheap (£10).

I would say go for it if you like it to drive. Major thing to watch out for are VCU (Viscus Coupling Unit) it effectively connects rear wheels to engine when needed. Have a search on how to test.
The door locks stick, but can be fixed by parts from Maplins for about £10 oper door.
I havent really read about any body or chassis problems. although i do seem to remember something about a chassis crack on a few models(might need a search). A couple of people have said they have had to change rear diff bushes and a few rear fuel pump problems.

I would say have a read up on the problems listed and then check as best as you can for them. Overall if you like the dive and it looks good then go for it. I dont know what you are used to but the freelander hasn't got a huge load space with all seats up.

Since purchase £15000 in 2002.
Central locking on one door doesnt work. (common on all models)
Tail gate handle cracked and fell off (frost (common on all models)
Electric Window wire came of regulator spool (common on all models)
Head gasket failure (Common on most models)
Last night 28/04/08 Clutch went awaiting RAC.
Cost so far £1250. Warranty Fooking useless doesnt cover all parts.

The XEDI is still a Rover engin and is a very good one at that. In my opinion much better than the TD4. If you choose to buy it, remember it is a never ending money pit like you will notice by reading the threads. It is a very expensive vehicle to maintain, so make sure you can afford it. I have a 99 model and love it.:p

I've just sold an Xedi ('98) with 161k on the clock. Had all of tugu's defects minus the Head gasket, which normally only gets the petrol jobbies, with sunroof failure, rear dif failure(oil seal leak), and a cold start problem, side from that, only other very common thing to look for is a thump when going over speed bumps/manhole covers etc which is normally the anti-roll bar drop links..again cheap.I'll partly echo Willa, its bloody expensive if you even show it a landy main dealers for work, if you can do bits yersen its not three bad....
