Hi there.

I bought a Disco 300TDI ES (1996) last week and it has a good service history with all but one service in the book up to 104K. I would like to keep up with the servicing. I have been quoted £250 +Vat for a service including a cam belt which I think is fine.

According to the manual it needs a service every 6000 miles. The manual (haynes - yes I know...) Says the 6000 interval is just oil and filter. So am I to take it that in doing 12000 pa, I will need a full service (not a cam belt every time) and then half way through the year it will just be oil and fiter (hopefully considerably less than £250+vat)

Probably a dumb question but having looked at the complexity of this beast I dont want to be penny wise and pound foolish if you get me drift!

Just been quoted £249 for a 36000 mile service (inc cam belt) and £77 for the 6000 mile service on a 96 Disco TDi300. All plus VAT and they will even come 25 miles to my house to pick up and drop off again.

Is that good?

Well, its being done even as we speak. Had a bit of a shock as the whole exhaust needed replacing (£150) I opted to get rid of the cat as they reckoned it was partially blocked anyway. All the brake pads needed replacing and the pulley on the camshaft had to be replaced. They reckoned the belt was in danger of coming off the edge of the pulley. What else? the dipstick tube had been broken and fixed at some point but innacurate leading to wrong level indicated and a danger of overfilling. I was offered a performance upgrade which includes removing the egr and altering the timing and K&N filter etc but I think I'll wait til next time for that one! So I'm bracing myself for a £500+ bill tomorrow! ah well.....

I know. However, my brother also has a disco and he uses this garage and for the last 2 years has had very good service. I think they offer good value and I was under the disco trying to suss out the diff lock and noticed the exhaust was looking a bit ropey and looked like it was the original one. I might just take the EGR off myself and see if its OK without the timing adjustment like they are recommending.
